US envoy in Benin calls for investigation into death of Peace Corps volunteer
APA-Cotonou (Benin) United States ambassador in Benin, Mrs Gayleatha Brown on Monday called on the government of Benin for an judicial inquiry into the murder of Cathérine Puzey, a Peace Corps volunteer shot dead at her house in Badjoudé, in the district of Kouande (more than 500km north of Cotonou) in the night of 11-12 March, APA learns from diplomatic sources in Cotonou.
« The death of Ms Puzey, one of our volunteers both loved and appreciated, leaves us deeply saddened, shocked and anxious that justice is done. It is our duty to see that the guilty person is found and prosecuted», said the ambassador.
Speaking at the opening of the conference on the implementation of the initiative and empowerment of women, she said the elimination of violence against women was a dear goal to the American government.
« The United States of America is very involved in the fight against violence against women through the initiative for justice and empowerment of women. With this program, the American government wanted to take concrete actions to improve the fate of women in some African countries, particularly Benin, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa», she stressed.
