Former New York City actress Nancy Sellin shares Peace Corps stories from Liberia

The former New York City actress, director and acting coach began her quest in 1965 during a key time in American history—the Vietnam War. She and her husband, Dale, wanted to follow the mandate of Kennedy and make a worldly impact. In her charming and intimate personal story, she travels from cold, chilly conditions of Anchorage, Alaska to her eventual arrival in the humid, tropical climate of West Africa. Before they left they were presented with a three-inch-thick, medical manual in which the first two words read … Avoid Mosquitoes … and which included all of the things that they shouldn’t do. But once they landed in Monrovia, Sellin felt like she was in heaven and wanted to savor every moment. Sellin encourages readers to take that trip back with her, some forty years later, as she talks about dealing with her homesickness, tribal languages, and the daily challenges of living in a different culture—all the while attempting to teach the Liberian natives valuable life skills.

“I soon recognized that I might not be able to save the world during my short stint with the Peace Corps, but I returned home with visceral experiences and altered perceptions that influenced the direction of my entire life,” Sellin said.

From her Turkish coffee experiences to sampling new foods, encountering a deadly snake on the road, as well as Christmas in the tropics, Sellin’s Avoid Mosquitoes—and Other Impossibilities takes the reader on a journey they will not soon forget.

Honduras RPCV Jon Carson, 33, presided over thousands of workers as national field director for the Obama campaign and said the biggest challenge -- and surprise -- was the volume of volunteer help, including more than 15,000 "super volunteers," who were a big part of what made Obama's campaign so successful. PCOL endorses Jon Carson as the man who can revitalize the Peace Corps, bring it into the internet age, and meet Obama's goal of doubling the size of the Peace Corps by 2011.
