Diane Marie Butler
March 16, 2009
Diane Marie Butler (Velie), age 59 of Fort Collins, passed away on February l6, 2009, with her loving family, including her dear cousin, Mimi Waddell by her side. She had fought a four year battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the daughter of an Army officer. She graduated from Annapolis High School, Annapolis, Md., and went on to attend St. Mary's College in southern Maryland and got her BA from the University of Maryland in teaching. She also did graduate work in speech pathology at the University of Florida, at Gainesville.
After graduating from college, Diane spent time with the Peace Corps in The Barbados, and traveled extensively thereafter. She eventually found herself back in Annapolis, Md., where she met and married her husband and soul mate David Butler, in 1987.
Through married life on Kent Island, Md., San Antonio, Texas and finally in Fort Collins, Diane devoted herself to her passion teaching. She touched so many lives with her sunny disposition, kindness, generosity and knack for knowing just what a student needed....a little TLC or just some understanding and guidance. Upon meeting Diane, many people described her as an angel.
She is survived by her husband, David Butler; and their children, John and Olivia, of Fort Collins; and her three sisters and their husbands, Nancy and Michael Moore, of Beach Haven, N.J., Jane and Michael Waters, of Annapolis, Md., and Mimi and Steve Dole, of Southworth, Wash. Diane was predeceased by her parents, Earl Robert and Mary Gorton Velie.
In lieu of flowers ... it is Diane's wish that we all unite behind our new president and make a difference from the grassroots up.
