Chris Dodd Down By 16 Points in Latest Quinnipiac Poll
The poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points, shows state Senator Sam Caligiuri ahead of Dodd by 41 percent to 37 percent. It also shows Greenwich resident Tom Foley, the former ambassador to Ireland under President George W. Bush, ahead of Dodd by 43 percent to 35 percent. "It's not about the Republican names in the poll,'' Caligiuri told Capitol Watch. "It's about Chris Dodd. It's a referendum on Chris Dodd. What it really says is people are ready for Chris Dodd to go. Chris Dodd is highly vulnerable. It's about how disgusted the people of Connecticut are with Senator Dodd.'' Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic in the 1960's.

Republican Rob Simmons burst into a 16-point lead today in the latest Quinnipiac University poll over U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd in the 2010 Senate race.
Dodd has been mentioned constantly in the news lately related to the highly controversial bonuses at the AIG insurance giant and his two refinanced mortgages with Countrywide Financial, one of the nation's most controversial mortgage companies.
Caligiuri concedes that he is not well known statewide - having served as the acting mayor of Waterbury and as a current state senator representing the city and surrounding towns. Still, he ranks ahead of Dodd in the poll.
"It's not about the Republican names in the poll,'' Caligiuri told Capitol Watch. "It's about Chris Dodd. It's a referendum on Chris Dodd. What it really says is people are ready for Chris Dodd to go. Chris Dodd is highly vulnerable. It's about how disgusted the people of Connecticut are with Senator Dodd.''
Longtime Democratic strategist Roy Occhiogrosso, who was the designated spokesman for Dodd to respond to the poll, reminded reporters that the election is 19 months away. He said that Dodd is behind in the poll because it has been a "one-sided conversation'' so far without any analysis of the GOP challengers.
"Nobody is talking about their records,'' Occhiogrosso said on the Capitol's fourth floor. "Sam Caligiuri is somebody who nobody knows.''
Once the campaign begins, Occhiogrosso said, "I think you'll start to see things turn around.''
Overall, 59 percent of those polled said they probably won't or definitely won't vote for Dodd in November 2010. Dodd's approval ratings have recently collapsed.
"A 33 percent job approval is unheard of for a 30-year incumbent, especially a Democrat in a blue state,'' said Douglas Schwartz, the poll's director. "Since the AIG controversy, his approval rating among Democrats is down to 51 percent, and only 58 percent of Democrats say they will vote for him against Simmons, who at this point is the best known and strongest Republican challenger.''
Simmons is already being targeted by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Washington, as shown by a video released Thursday.

Honduras RPCV Jon Carson, 33, presided over thousands of workers as national field director for the Obama campaign and said the biggest challenge -- and surprise -- was the volume of volunteer help, including more than 15,000 "super volunteers," who were a big part of what made Obama's campaign so successful. PCOL endorses Jon Carson as the man who can revitalize the Peace Corps, bring it into the internet age, and meet Obama's goal of doubling the size of the Peace Corps by 2011.
