In the Lower Haight, New Three Twins Shop Scoops Organic Ice Cream with Eco Flair

After opening his first shop in San Rafael in 2005 and another in Napa two years later, organic ice cream purveyor Neal Gottlieb finally has a presence in the city. On Friday, the lucky third outlet of Three Twins ice cream opened on Fillmore in the Lower Haight.

A former Peace Corps volunteer who once worked in Morocco, Gottlieb named his company for the nickname given to an apartment he once shared with his twin brother and wife, also a twin. Gottlieb is passionate about more than just ice cream: He offsets Three Twins' carbon emissions, composts, and uses only organic ingredients.

Flavors rotate frequently and usually include a vegan offering. We sampled and loved the rich chocolate Stormy Night, made with rice milk. We then gobbled a daintily-portioned single of rich pistachio and balsamic-dappled Strawberry Je Ne Sais Quoi ($3.25) in about two minutes and still wanted more. Later in the day when we did the math, we realized that the pint size ($6) provides a pretty sweet value -- we should have grabbed that. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

If you find yourself in San Rafael, home of the original Three Twins (641 Del Ganado at Las Reposas), the folks behind the counter at the Lower Haight shop recommend you try the waffle cones made fresh on site. For now, anyway, customers in SF are out of luck: The limited energy supply in the small Lower Haight shop makes it a no-cone zone.

PCOL's Candidate for Peace Corps Director Honduras RPCV Jon Carson, 33, presided over thousands of workers as national field director for the Obama campaign and said the biggest challenge -- and surprise -- was the volume of volunteer help, including more than 15,000 "super volunteers," who were a big part of what made Obama's campaign so successful.
