Madison - Weeks after Republicans whispered that Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle would be named director of the Peace Corps, President Obama on Tuesday said he wants to give the job to career international development specialist Aaron Williams.
Williams, vice president for international business development with RTI International, has helped design and manage assistance programs in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. He was a senior manager at the U.S. Agency for International Development and reached the rank of career minister in the Senior Foreign Service.
When the GOP-fueled rumor surfaced in June, Doyle aides immediately condemned it as bogus. The Democrat has not yet said whether he will seek a third term next year, but has laid the fund-raising and campaign groundwork to do so.
Doyle and his wife, Jessica, served in the Peace Corps early in their careers, and have said the experience shaped their careers and personal philosophies.
