Zachery Scott writes: Puppy Takes a Man

My puppy, Chissy, has found a boyfriend. He's a nice dog who belongs to the local butcher, so he eats well. His coat is clean and shiny, he doesn't smell and he has a certain gallop when he runs, almost equestrian in nature. When I take Chissy for walks to the Secondary School for my student meetings, the other dog comes with us to play with her. It's still early in the courting stage, but they are definitely interested in each other so it has potential to grow into a sustentative loving relationship.

I know what you're saying; Chissy is too young to begin that sort of thing. I mean, I just got her as a puppy in January. Normally I would agree with you, but kids these days are dating so much earlier than when I was their age. Plus Chissy is developing faster than some of her peers, and I've always been of the belief that it is better to give children freedom with supervision than to completely ban something that they will probably end up doing anyways behind your back.

So I figure that there is no harm that can come to some supervised flirtation between kids, right?

Chissy is my sweet little darling and wouldn't cross the line with a boy, unlike that whore of an older cat sister of hers, Sammy.

I mean, when I came home from a trip in February only to find three newborn kittens huddled together in the kitchen, I was shocked. I didn't even know she was pregnant! She practically lied to me keeping this a secret.

And where is the father in all this? Gone, that's where. It shows her judgment for a boy's character. How typical for the guy to have his fun and then just leave all responsibility of going through pregnancy and raising the kids to the female.

At least Chissy had the consideration to introduce me to her romantic interest. Sammy just went out each night and got knocked up by the first loser with a tail that showed interest.

Also, I just have to say that her maternal instincts leave a lot to be desired. After she had the kittens she, still was going out at night, I imagine to the local club to try and score free drinks from older, more desperate male cats. She doesn't like to nurse the kittens and refuses to sleep with them at night. I even woke up one morning to find that there was one less kitten in the group. I started searching around for it and eventually found him abandoned in one of my boxes in another room. She left a dumpster kitty! I have to say, I fear for what those kittens would have gone through had I not been there.

Sammy and I got into a few fights when she would saunter in at ridiculous hours of the night, after doing who-knows-what with God-knows-who.

Many nights our arguments would escalate into yelling. One time I lost my temper, called her a whore and threw my glass of scotch against the wall, shattering it as she ran crying into the other room.

However, we've talked since then and I realized that she was just scared to be such a young mother with so much responsibility on her shoulders. I forget how easy it is to make mistakes as a teenager and how much you need direction and advice.

Anyway, things are better now.

Chissy and I help out with the kittens while Sammy has a couple hours to herself each evening to catch mice or just to be alone with her thoughts and maybe do some yoga.

Things have cooled down in the house lately and we all seem to be getting along and pitching in to raise the kittens together.

I found homes for the two that look most like their Calico mother. My neighbor and I will keep the one who I assume looks most like her deadbeat biological father, since she is jet back with white feet. I was originally going to name the child Bastard, but settled on Socks instead.

Chissy, Sammy and I are working on re-building the trust and communication that was damaged, and our conversations at night have been more constructive about how we should make positive decisions in our lives.

Overall, I have to say that we really came together as a family to make the best of a bad situation.

Yea… it gets lonely here sometimes.
