JOSEPH P. MELLEN is a partner and serves as Chairman of the firm's Tax Practice Group. He is a graduate of Xavier University (B.S. Economics, 1971) and the University of Toledo College of Law (J.D., 1977). Upon his graduation from Xavier, Mr. Mellen served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Colombia as an Economics and Business consultant. Prior to joining Keating, Muething & Klekamp, P.L.L., Mr. Mellen was associated with an international certified public accounting firm. He is admitted to practice before the courts of Ohio (1977), U.S. District Court and the U.S. Tax Court. He has been an active participant as lecturer and moderator of taxation and corporate law seminars, including serving as chair (1993) of the Southwestern Ohio Tax Institute. He also served as Chair (1996-1997) of the Taxation Committee of the Cincinnati Bar Association. Mr. Mellen is also licensed (Ohio, 1982) as a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He presently serves on the Boards of Trustees of the Cincinnati Bar Foundation and the Cincinnati District Council, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, is a member of the Legacy Society (Planned Giving Advisory) of the Cincinnati Bar Foundation, and has served as a member of the Xavier University Alumni Board of Governors. Mr. Mellen's practice is concentrated in the taxation and commercial transaction areas, with an emphasis on corporations, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial transaction structuring issues. Mr. Mellen also has extensive experience in estate and closely-held business succession planning matters.
