Obituary for Liberia Associate Director for Training Musuleng "D. Mus" Cooper
Dorothy Musuleng Cooper was born on Sept. 9, 1930 in Arthington, Montserrado County to the union of Augustus (Gus) Washington Cooper and Irene Anna Flossy Knight. She was a product of Bromley Mission and College of West Africa (CWA), where she completed her secondary education in 1949. In the 1950s she was wedded to Sergeant Samuel Herring of the Armed Forces of Liberia, who later rose to the rank of General. To that union several children were born. She obtained the Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Elementary Education from San Franscisco State University, and both times graduated magna cum laude. Her daughter Madia, who lives in Maryland, USA, remembers her mom as "a mother to everybody." Mrs. Cooper had eight biological children, four of whom predeceased her. They were Delrene, Harriett, Carol and McDonald.

The death is announced of Mrs. D. Musuleng Cooper, an outstanding Liberian educator and former Foreign Minister of Liberia, which sad event occurred today, June 30, 2009 at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia. She was 79. Mrs. Cooper also served a few years ago as acting president of the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU). She was once Associate Director for Training, Peace Corps Liberia.
In the 1970s and 1980s she served as chief administrator of the School System of the Liberian, Swedish American Company, LAMCO, at the time one of Africa's biggest companies.
In the 1990s she was appointed Foreign Minister of Liberia, the first woman to hold that post. The second is the current Foreign Minister, Olubankie King Akelere.

Survivors include several sisters and brothers: Eva Mae Caulker, Amelia Cooper, Ivy Zoe Cooper, Mrs. Ethel Cooper Barrie, Evangeline Cooper Gaba, Augusta Cooper, Small Amelia Cooper, Hannah Cooper, Elizabeth Cooper; brothers, Eugene Cooper, Augustus W. Cooper, Jr., Phillip Cooper.
Mrs. D. Musuleng is also survived by several children: Sam Hilton Herring, Jr., Boehnflahn J. Herring, Alonzo B. Herring, Mrs. Eva Mae Herring Christopher, Mrs. Madia Herring Mensah, Johnette, Laurel, Christopher, Mrs. Eunice Tubman, Amanda, Byogah, Annie and Trokon. Survivors also include 24 grand children and nine great grand children.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
