A personal essay by former Peace Corps volunteer Mary Hensley (Kalinga, Philippines 1976-78) has been published in the October 2009 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine. The October issue, 50 Places of a Lifetime, is a special anniversary edition highlighting the world greatest destinations. Hensley was asked to write about the high-elevation rice terraces of the Philippine Cordillera, which are included on the list. Mary is the founder of the Cordillera Heirloom Rice Project and Eighth Wonder, Inc. (www.heirloomrice.com), its marketing partner in the United States. The project is working to develop an international market for the heirloom rice as a means to bring about poverty reduction and cultural and environmental preservation in the historic terraces.
