The students spent time rehabbing a playground - built from old tires and discarded tables - bringing Beanie Babies to orphans and helping Ga-Mamabolo teachers learn new teaching techniques. They also spent two days in Switzerland - Zurich on the way over and Lucerne on the way back - and had a chance to go to a wildlife waterhole and photograph everything from "scary baboons to adorable elephants." "But what we took away from this is just how much we cared about each other," said Seth Leavitt-Carlson, who was able to visit the family who hosted he and his wife for two years.

Alan MacRae/for the Citizen MEMBERS OF the Laconia High School Key Club present photos and a report on their recent trip to South Africa in the Donald Piper Auditorium Wednesday.

Laughing at stories of bathing in two inches of cold water in an outdoor bucket, washing their clothes by hand and sleeping in unheated homes during 40 degree nights, the eight Key Clubbers who spent two weeks in a South African village said they nevertheless would not trade their experience for anything.

The trip, a dream of teachers and former Peace Corps volunteers Seth and Ivy Leavitt-Carlson, became a reality in July and Wednesday night the students presented the education component of their trip to friends and family at the Laconia High School.

Students Lyle Beetle, Erica Cross, Mackenzie Duquette, Vincent Denaris, Amanda Bridge, Jocelyn Morin and Ashley Witham each earned extended learning opportunity credits by preparing a report and a display on one individual area of study.

From Joscelyn Morin, who spent her time in an HIV-AIDS clinic, to Kyle Beetle, who stayed with the family of a local magistrate and wrote about politics, each shared their trip and what they learned in a science fair-type forum.

The students also spent time rehabbing a playground - built from old tires and discarded tables - bringing Beanie Babies to orphans and helping Ga-Mamabolo teachers learn new teaching techniques.

They also spent two days in Switzerland - Zurich on the way over and Lucerne on the way back - and had a chance to go to a wildlife waterhole and photograph everything from "scary baboons to adorable elephants."

"But what we took away from this is just how much we cared about each other," said Seth Leavitt-Carlson, who was able to visit the family who hosted he and his wife for two years.
