Taylor Flath will be serving with the Peace Corps in Belize
Taylor had wanted to join the Peace Corps since she was a kid. As we watched her walk toward the plane that would carry her on her way to follow her dream and serve her country, we were flooded with emotion: pride, admiration, anxiety, hope. Yes, as parents, we're worried, but we have a comfort level supported by the very positive experience we've had with the Peace Corps. This impressive organization is a federal agency reporting to Congress and the executive branch, and it is run and staffed by dedicated, competent people.

Peace Corps volunteer lives her dream

On Wednesday, my wife and I took Taylor, our 23-year-old daughter, to the airport for a 6 a.m. flight to Washington, D.C. She carried luggage that she and her mother had carefully packed over a period of weeks -- 80 pounds allowed for a trip that's to last two years. She will be serving with the Peace Corps in Belize.
After a one-day orientation in D.C., she headed to Miami, then on to Belize City and Belmopan, for three months of training in the Peace Corps' Healthy Communities program. She will then get her two-year assignment in the south of Belize, where K'iche, a Mayan language, is spoken.

We love our daughter and wish her and all the Peace Corps volunteers heading overseas the best of luck. Here's hoping they can make a difference.
When we arrived at the terminal, I snapped a picture of Taylor with all of her carefully packed gear. That photo will have a permanent home on my desk.
