"Charlie," as we volunteers called him, was a very vibrant and energetic person who was the right person at the right time for the Peace Corps program in India. He, on several occasions, would tell us about his journeys to the Himalayas, and we were in awe about his travels. I remember well when he visited my village in the northern state of Punjab, that he discovered I was suffering from dehydration and several other bacterial problems, with lots of weight loss. He told me what to do to move forward. In four days, I was well and I lived in India for five more years without any major health problems.

Reader's view: Houston also directed Peace Corps in India

I read with great interest of the death of Dr. Charles Houston, world-known Mount Everest climber and a pioneer of high-
altitude medicine. What the obituary did not mention was that Houston was the first Peace Corps director in India from 1961 to 1964. I know that as I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in India during the same time period under his leadership. "Charlie," as we volunteers called him, was a very vibrant and energetic person who was the right person at the right time for the Peace Corps program in India. He, on several occasions, would tell us about his journeys to the Himalayas, and we were in awe about his travels.

He told me what to do to move forward. In four days, I was well and I lived in India for five more years without any major health problems.
Dr. Houston moved on to other things, including an Omnimax-style movie on the challenges of climbing Mount Everest - a fitting tribute to his life's legacy.
