Obituary for Ecudaor Country Director Jonathan M. 'Jake' Bair
He returned to New Jersey to work with migrant workers and in 1967 became director of the Peace Corps program in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He settled in the Washington area in the early 1970s and was a fundraiser and grant writer for nonprofit groups involved in rural wastewater projects. He was a member of the Water and Waste Operators Association of Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

Jonathan M. 'Jake' Bair Training Center Director
Jonathan M. "Jake" Bair, 74, the retired director of a center that trains operators of wastewater treatment plants, died Aug. 7 at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center of complications from hip-replacement surgery. He also had post-polio syndrome, a degenerative condition affecting former polio patients.
Mr. Bair, who had worked in community development and environmental programs since the 1960s, helped found the Maryland Center for Environmental Training in 1982. He was director of the center, at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, until 2005. He continued to consult for the center until his death.
Jonathan Macy Bair was born in Boston and was a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, from which he received a master's degree in philosophy in 1961. While studying for a doctorate in Spanish philosophy at Rutgers in the 1960s, he received a Fulbright fellowship and spent two years at the University of Zaragoza in Spain.

Mr. Bair had lived in Chevy Chase since 1990 and had a farm in Sinks Grove, W.Va. He was fluent in Spanish and was interested in music, books, food and photography.
His marriage to Judith Moezelaar Bair ended in divorce.
Survivors include his partner of 19 years, Nancy Scribner of Chevy Chase; two sons from his marriage, Lorne W. Bair of Winchester and Jonathan Lucas "Luke" Bair of Sinks Grove; a sister; a brother; and two grandchildren.
