Sources say that U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron R. Hume is a leading candidate to succeed Anne Patterson as the next nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, but added that the decision is not final yet.

AFPAK Special Envoy Richard Holbrooke is said to favor Hume for the job. Administration officials would not comment on the possible nomination, and Holbrooke and Hume did not respond to queries.
Normal embassy rotations happen in the summer, and ambassadors typically serve three year terms, with decisions on future postings usually being finalized in December. Hume has served as the U.S. ambassador in Jakarta since 2007, as has Patterson in Islamabad.
