Thailand RPCV Mike Fields coaches Mynderse boys basketball to become state contender
Fields' background includes time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand and work in Laos for the International Voluntary Services. His first coaching position came with the national team of Laos in 1968. That team earned its first win at the international level with Fields as the head coach. "The national stadium was two wooden baskets and a tin roof," Fields said. "It had a few benches for spectators. "It was during the Vietnam War. Sports were not a priority."

From junior guard Dave Lynch's point of view, last season's version of the Mynderse Blue Devils was a boys basketball team that was in too much of a hurry to run its high-tempo offense.
"We were young," Lynch said. "For most of us, it was our first year on varsity. We'd rush things.
"We tried it, but we didn't fit the mold. Just practicing it more and everyone getting used to it helped."
Faster than you can say U-turn, the Blue Devils of Seneca Falls turned it around. They equaled last season's win total after five games and haven't lost yet after a move down from Class B.
Mynderse is 23-0 as the Section V Class C1 champions head into the regional round of the state tournament, 2 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo State against Middle College, the Buffalo-region champion.
The Blue Devils, Section V's last unbeaten boys team, are No. 2 in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C state rankings, behind 21-0 West Canada of Section III (Syracuse-region).
"It feels good to achieve after last year when we were five and a lot," sophomore guard Dylan Verkey said about the team's 5-16 record. "Having a zero in the loss column is nice.
"That doesn't happen very often."
[Excerpt]
Fields, in his fourth season at Mynderse, coached a state champion and a state runner-up in the rough equivalent of Class C in Pennsylvania from 1979-2003.
Teams that Fields coached at Juniata Valley High in Alexandria, Pa., are or were national record holders when it comes to the 3-point shot, including the 1996-97 team's 94 attempts in a game and the 2001-02 squad's 34 made in a game.
"He's been all over the place and done many things," Sciotti said.
