SAN ANGELO, Texas - One thing the nominees had in common was that they didn't expect it.
Some, like Pat Attebery, didn't even know who chose them to be honored as a Woman of Distinction. Attebery was one of six women recognized Thursday by the Girl Scouts as a Woman of Distinction for positive impact on the community.
The distinctions are given annually to women, who "exemplify those traits we hold in the highest esteem - courage, confidence and character," said Kathy Muñoz, master of ceremonies for the fourth annual Women of Distinction luncheon, which is also the main fundraiser for the local service unit area of the Girl Scouts of Central Texas. Proceeds go toward scholarships, camping trips and other programs for about 800 girls in Tom Green and surrounding counties.
[Excerpt]
After a welcome from Muñoz and the presentation of colors from a troop of poised young scouts wearing the signature green sash covered in buttons and patches, the audience dined while hearing from a former girl scout talk about how scouting prepared her for her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in post-Communist Romania.
Lisa Fisher-Cazacu, author of "Bread, Salt and Plum Brandy," who was living in Georgetown before she joined the Peace Corps, said she was "rooted in scouting."
"Girl scouts prepared me to be the woman I am today," she said.
Many of the six women honored - teachers, volunteers, mentors, mothers and one city councilwoman among them - became involved in the Scouts because of their children, or were scouts themselves. Shirley Lewis, one of the honorees, became a troop leader when her 6-year-old daughter said she wanted to be a Girl Scout. Lewis has received Presidential Volunteer Service Award for more than 4,000 hours of community service.
