The Papua New Guinea-based United States embassy says it fully supports a Solomon Islands Government request for the resumption of the US Peace Corps Service in the country
The service, under which the United States deployed volunteers to serve for periods of two to three years, was suspended at the height of the ethnic tensions. But Honiara recently requested Washington to restart the programme. Deputy United States ambassador to Solomon Islands Paul Berg told the Solomon Star their embassy in Moresby had endorsed and forwarded the request to Washington. "We have yet to receive any feed backs from Washington," Mr Berg said yesterday. "But we fully supported the request and hope Washington would consider it sooner," he said.

THE Papua New Guinea-based United States embassy says it fully supports a Solomon Islands Government request for the resumption of the US Peace Corps Service in the country.
Mr Berg was in Honiara this week to attend talks between the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and the US Government over the fishing treaty between the two parties.
He also met Foreign Affairs minister William Haomae and the Minister for Justice and Legal Affairs Laurie Chan.
In talks with Mr Haomae, Mr Berg said they discussed the peace corps issue as well as the United States desire to engage more in the Pacific.
"You will recall Pacific island leaders recently met Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New York recently.
"This was during the United Nations General Assembly.
"During that meeting Ms Clinton told Pacific leaders the Obama administration's desire to engage more in the Pacific.
"Americans have a lot of commonalities with this region so there's a real need for US involvement here," Mr Berg said.
He said his talks with Mr Haomae touched on those areas.
With Mr Chan, Mr Berg said they discussed how the US can assist in areas pertaining to legal and judicial issues, particularly with trans-national crime.
Meanwhile, Mr Berg said the United States new ambassador to PNG, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, Teddy Taylor is expected to visit the country soon to present his credentials.
Mr Taylor is based in Port Moresby.
