FORT PIERCE - Thomas Carmine Maresco Jr. of Port St. Lucie, a 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer killed Sept. 3 in southern Africa, was laid to rest Thursday afternoon.
Ambassador H.E. David Mohlomi Rantekoa expressed his country's condolences to the Maresco family during graveside services at Riverview Memorial Park.
Maresco Jr. joined the Peace Corps after graduating with a biology degree from the University of Florida in 2008 and had been serving as a science teacher in the highlands village of Katse, Lesotho, since November 2009. Several Peace Corps volunteers and officials, including Chief of Staff Stacy Rhodes, attended Maresco Jr.'s funeral service at St. Lucie Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie and the graveside service in Fort Pierce.
Rhodes read letters of condolence from Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams and President and Mrs. Obama.
Members of the media were not allowed at the funeral service.

Memo to Incoming Director Williams
PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive.
