New Winners Announced For "My Piece of the Peace Corps" competition
LOS ANGELES, November 04, 2010, --- The Peace Corps Effect, a short by Marlene Nancy Lopez, a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova, has been disqualified after winning first place in the YouTube contest "My Piece of the Peace Corps" initiated in celebration of the organization's 50th anniversary. National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) competition judges ruled that the song used in the video was actually under copyright and thus violated contest rules.
As a result, the previous second place winner has been elevated to first place: Carrie Pavlik of Pittsburgh, PA, for her video, My Piece of the Peace Corps. Pavlik receives a first place cash prize of $2,500.
Moving up from third to second place is Chicagoan John Garvey, a Peace Corps volunteer serving in Burkina Faso, for his light-hearted video titled A Peace Corps Song. Garvey receives a $1,000 cash prize.
And upped to third place is Matthew Hardwick, a Peace Corps volunteer serving in Vanuata, for his short Leaving Home (Vanuatu). Hardwick, who's from Lakeland, Fla., earns $500.
"The videos were as diverse and fun to watch as anything on YouTube-everything from the camerawork to the songs to the storytelling," said Erica Burman, director of communications for the NPCA and a former volunteer in The Gambia.. "Still, despite their differences, they all showed the profound effect the Peace Corps has on Volunteers and the people around them."

| Big Omission in Comprehensive Report The Peace Corps has always neglected the third goal, allocating less than 1% of their resources to it, so when Aaron Williams promised Senator Dodd to provide a "Comprehensive Assessment Report" with ideas to strengthen and reform the agency's operations we expected to see some forceful recommendations to address this critical weakness. Read the report and our commentary on the big omission in the third goal that committee members didn't address, discuss, or even mention. |
| Memo to Incoming Director Williams PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive.
