Art Heim, the former director of the Industrial Research Office at Penn State who has worked in both the private and public sectors, is the first director of the Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania.
The nonprofit, which is in the process of opening an interactive children's museum at 112 W. Foster Ave., in State College, announced the appointment Friday. The science-focused center could open in the spring, depending on how fundraising goes.
"I'm really excited about the potential," Heim said. "It's early in the evolution of this project so we really have to work hard to convert the dream to reality."
He said that means being realistic with goals for the museum and making sure proper planning and development take place. Heim said he thinks his background will help that, including putting the financing and management in place to make sure the center opens.
He said the center will be an investment in the community and in its children's future. It will include interactive exhibits geared to children ages 12 and younger.
Heim, 64, has 40 years of experience in a variety of fields. Most recently, he returned in June after 27 months service with the U.S. Peace Corps in Botswana, an experience he sought after retiring from Penn State.
In addition to heading the Industrial Research Office at Penn State, he directed Innovation Park and Outreach and Continuing Education Programs at Penn State Berks and Scranton.
He also worked as vice president for economic development at the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County and as senior associate for economic development planning at Delta Development Group.
He has a bachelor's in environmental resource management and a master's and doctorate in education and workforce development.
Discovery Space marketing chairman Skip Webster said it was a coup for the group to have Heim as the first director.
"We need someone that can really steer the ship and oversee the construction and renovation of the building, and that's a full time job," Webster said.
He said the nonprofit has raised about a third of the $550,000 it will need to open and operate in the first 14 months. Heim started work Oct. 1.

Peace Corps Online The Independent News Forum serving Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
| Support Independent Funding for the Third Goal The Peace Corps has always neglected the third goal, allocating less than 1% of their resources to "bringing the world back home." Senator Dodd addressed this issue in the "Peace Corps for the 21st Century" bill passed by the US Senate and Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter proposed a "Peace Corps Foundation" at no cost to the US government. Both are good approaches but the recent "Comprehensive Assessment Report" didn't address the issue of independent funding for the third goal at all. |
| Memo to Incoming Director Williams PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive. Latest: Greetings from Director Williams |
