"Not only is it an opportunity to do good and help other people, but it's an opportunity to see another country, another continent, another culture, a whole different way of living and that's incredibly amazing," Villarruel said: "I felt I got as much out of it, if not more, than I gave."

Alternatives after graduation
By Chris Zois
Roosevelt offers many opportunities for students to succeed after graduation in terms of both pursing their careers and volunteer options.
LEAD presented the workshop "Alternative Routes After Graduation," which gave students an opportunity to look at volunteer opportunities to consider after graduation.
Community Engagement Coordinator at Roosevelt, Dana Fogarty, gave the presentation.
Fogarty said that in these economic times, it's good to keep your options open and try other things.
"Joining a volunteer group is an alternative way to get from point a to point b in your career," Fogarty said: "It's a great way of getting experience and you would be making a difference."
Some Roosevelt students have already participated in such groups and have enjoyed their experiences.
MFA student Cecillia Villarruel was a member of the Peace Corps from 2006 to 2008.
"Not only is it an opportunity to do good and help other people, but it's an opportunity to see another country, another continent, another culture, a whole different way of living and that's incredibly amazing," Villarruel said: "I felt I got as much out of it, if not more, than I gave."
Villarruel taught English in a village in Namibia and led a project to renovate several classrooms in the school.
"I know I made a difference," Villarruel said: "The school I taught at ended up naming one of it's buildings after me; it's a great honor."

Peace Corps Online The Independent News Forum serving Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
| Support Independent Funding for the Third Goal The Peace Corps has always neglected the third goal, allocating less than 1% of their resources to "bringing the world back home." Senator Dodd addressed this issue in the "Peace Corps for the 21st Century" bill passed by the US Senate and Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter proposed a "Peace Corps Foundation" at no cost to the US government. Both are good approaches but the recent "Comprehensive Assessment Report" didn't address the issue of independent funding for the third goal at all. |
| Memo to Incoming Director Williams PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive. Latest: Greetings from Director Williams |
