From the Back Cover
"The stories in The Last Camel deal with fiction, facticity, and the space between the two. never the swashbuckling Peace Corps volunteer, D'Haem's stories teem with compassion, impish curiousity, and downright humility. The stories introduce all sorts of characters, delightful and/or frightening. These are tales of exposure and advocacy woven with care and diligence. The result is a brilliant tapestry corpus on Somali, but opportune." -Professor Ali Jimale Ahmed, author of DAYBREAK IS NEAR and editor of The INVENTION OF SOMALIA
"Most interesting...D'Haem tells [true stories] through the voices of Somali women, some of them excruciatingly honest..." -Publisher's Weekly
THE LAST CAMEL is a collection of stories about the people who live in a little village in Northern Somalia. These are compelling tales about African spirits, clever women, untouchable Midgaans, sagacious elders who struggle with modern technology, bandits, and a few goats. The stories are embellished; each one illustrates a special aspect of Somali culture. The tales are told by a young American Peace Corps teacher who lived alone in the village of Arabsiyo in Northern Somalia in the late 60s. The village had no electricity, no telephone, no reliable water supply, and little food. The Somali villagers who were born in Arabsiyo, and the American who came to live among them, struggled mightily to understand each other and the changing world about them. The book reveals the complex hearts and minds of the Somali people because it was written by a young woman who slept among the camels, spoke the language, starved, smiled, and savored life in Africa.

Jeanne: Your Aunt Joyce (Michigan)let me borrow her copy of "The Last Camel". It is one of my favorite books. The way you tell about the people and the culture the reader feels like they are right there with you experiencing what you experience. I have recommended this book to so many people. In fact, I believe your Aunt has a line-up of people from our church waiting to read it. Your book is a "must read" as far as I'm concerned.

Allah said in the Qura’n: Alqabalia minaljahiliyatalula So most Somali tribe names are from Jahiliya because you can’t explain their names in arabic or islamic way or Somali language; So dir and Darood were Budist idols worship before Christianity, Majeerteen : is Mountains in majeertenian region name from greek word, also Mugadisho is greek name. faro’s time Somali they call them Pont Land Means: Goods smell land after fir’oon collapse from Allah; Pont Land Kingdom were live in long time discrimination between Somalis because they refuse to inter Christainity.
Somalis had another religion names like yibir, Durmihiin, Makail, Awal, Habar Raabi=( Imaam in the Jews)….
After the Christinity inter to Somalia, Somalis came Christian and took Christian names Like: Ogaden, Isaac, Midgan, Kaahin= (Imaam in the church), Abgaal, Gaaljecel, We are Muslims and when we swearing to wallahi billahi, we flow the word (Tallahi) that means Sanam word that the S’udi Arabia obey or worship before Islam after that we pray in mosque how come?.
In Ancient time Every new religion were struggling to defeat the religion that before and they inter to our country their bad culture, like the Roman and South American now meet a Strong discrimination, till when we follow the people that make defeat your country? After Islam there were a huge discrimination from the Arab against all Somalis to be a good Muslims and they didn’t educate Somalis in ISlam because we are bordering Ethopia. when they feel danger from Ethiopia they put Somalis in Arabic wold. We are Muslims and when we swering to wallahi billahi, we follow the word (Tallahi) that means Sanam word that the S’udi Arabia obey or worship before Islam.
Somalis have to read their real history not the harsh push life stories and tell generation after generation.
Our prophet Mohamed married from from the Jews (Bint khuday al akhdab), and from the Christian ( Maria al qubdiya ).
Then where are the Somali Mohammedans with the
Midguns that are our traditional hunters, doctors, blacksmiths, craftsmen, singers, tailors and fashion designers, barbers and hairstylists, hygiene attendants and butchers. White man call them Mid guns means ( middle of the gun) so they make them defeat many times.
The White Christian man didn’t left for Somalis : Due to mathematic, Science or technology but they destroyed all we had and stolen Somali history books. they teach Somalis to be ignorant and free of technology, also job differences like: Somalis can do ( Pubic hair cut ) when they are Nurse but not (haircut), also change nappy , do boy, krishboy, house mads, do sweepers at (Yemen, UAE and overseas), it’s shameful to make (shoes) but shine them, medical and ( gudninka) its shameful too, but let the Mid guns have get medical practicing to their body when around the world people get practice to the ( Mice or rats). The old will was to Somalis to beg hope from ( Boqor bacayr’s mountain) when any Somali person have long lasting sickness, also let the devil go away from Boqor Bacayr by throwing stones. So Somali (dameeri dhan racday) supported and follow because in the Qur’an Fir’on said (Anaa ilahakum alaclaa) then ancient people were looking at the ground with hold breath as the Somalis doing now when anyone from biggest tribe doing wrong, mistreat or unlwfullness, and no judgement.
