New Peace Corps Volunteers Arrive in Region

Castries, St. Lucia, September 6, 2000 -- Fifty-one American citizens were sworn-in last week as Peace Corps volunteers serving in the Eastern Caribbean. Ranging in age from 21 to 67, the 11 men and 40 women reflect the diversity of American culture and embody a vast range of experience and education.

The new group of volunteers will continue Peace Corps programs focusing on the educational and self-esteem needs of out-of-school youth and youth-at-risk as well as projects in the areas of health, education and special education.

Peace Corps Eastern Caribbean operates programs on five islands. Six of the new volunteers will be assigned to Antigua and Barbuda; 13 to Dominica; eight to Grenada; ten to St. Lucia; and 14 to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This is the 67th class of Peace Corps Volunteers to serve in the region, bringing the total number currently in the Eastern Caribbean to 102. More than 150, 000 Americans have served as Peace corps volunteers in over 130 countries, and at present, 6,000 are serving in 80 countries around the world. In March of next year, the movement will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
