Deborah, the ‘reflective one' of the Irish and Bohemian gypsy ways…sensitive seeker, lover of words, writer of poetry and song, mother of fur-children, woods-walker, singer and keyboardist, aspiring harpist and whistler, piano teacher, nurse-massage therapist, world-traveller…dreams of Kylemore Abbey and the trees in Coole…listening for a phrase in the language of Ireland's poets…and the opening of travel wherever the winds may blow. Deborah Steinbar's first memories are of sitting beside her grandmother on the piano bench while aunts and cousins gathered around to sing songs. Deb began formal piano lessons in second grade and continued through high school where she was active as an accompanist and church organist along with solo and ensemble singing.
Her initial career path included degrees in nursing and psychology from the University of North Dakota in 1975 and two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer nurse on the mideast island of Bahrain. Upon return to the US, she completed training and certification as a family nurse practioner and physician's assistant and spent the following twelve years in various health care positions around Minnesota and North Dakota. She currently is a certified nurse/massage therapist and practices out of her home on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Circling back to music in 1989, she renewed her love for piano. She completed a BA in music at Bemidji State University in 1992 and was a co-recipient of the Carl O. Thompson award recognizing the top graduate in instrumental music. She then went on to study with Dr. Jane Solose at the University of North Dakota and earned a master's degree in music (1994) with a major in piano and minors in voice and harpsichord.
Deborah has been an active performer with the Bemidji Headwaters Trio and a duo-pianist with Ms. Sara Bloom premiering works by women composers. She holds a MN Music Teachers Association (MMTA) Professional certification in piano and harpsichord and is a National Certified Teacher of Music. She has served as a piano adjudicator for the MMTA and the Lakes Area Federation of Music Clubs. She maintains a private piano studio called 'La Ricordanza' in Cass Lake, Minnesota.
Deborah resides, with husband Bill Petersen and three cats, on the banks of the Mississippi River. She enjoys reading, genealogy research, gardening, writing and composing, woods walking, Irish dance, swimming, yoga, and cross-country skiing.
