Thanks for stopping by for a "na gosti"! I'm Heather - a Peace Corps Volunteer in southern Bulgaria. I teach English at a language school in Smolyan, a beautiful town in the Rhodope mountains.
October 28, 2001
Hey everybody! Happy Halloween! It's a beautiful day here in the Rhodopes. The mountains are bursting with colors and the sun is shining. Although, in the past couple of days, it's starting getting a lot colder. I guess winter's determined to catch us all!
The new school year is going rather well. I'm only teaching two grades this year - 8th and 9th grade - which I absolutely love. I'm not going to be spread so thin and I'll have time to kick back and relax with my friends and neighbors more that I did last year. I'm definitely looking forward to that.
I'm in the process of making travel plans. Weekend after next, I'll be taking a weekend tour of the Rhodopes. We'll see Bachkovo Monastery and a bunch of smaller towns and villages that I normally don't have the chance to see. This is being organized by an Eco club out of Chepelare and a couple of ENV PCVs, Bryan & Robert. The pictures are going to be fabulous, I'm sure. And for that, I want to thank my counterpart, Marieta, for loaning me her camera. Unfortunately last month, my camera, jacket and couple other things were stolen off the bus in Plovdiv. Somebody had a great early Christmas. After my Rhodope tour, I'm going to a language IST in the northern town of Pleven. The weekend after, since I'll be in the area, I hope to visit some of my PCV friends there.
Now for my big travel plan - wish me luck as I'm planning on going to my director this week to ask for my holiday vacation time. I plan to go home for the holidays (I'll be home.... for Christmas...). The catch? Well - I want an extra week - for two reasons. 1. I haven't seen my family and friends back home for about a year and a half. 2. If I can leave on the 13th, I'll save about $80-100 on the air fare. We shall see!
Take care - and please write me! I'd love to hear from you!
Love, Heather

Heather,
I'm a Yank', freshly planted in Smolyan. My good Stateside Bulgarian friend, Chris, sent me a connection to your site. I wondered why, at first. But then I figured, it is because we are in similar boats.
Trust you are well. Hope you manage to wangle your extra vacation. ;)
Yours,
Sean
