Dennis Lucey was director of the Peace Corps in Liberia for two years
A son of Irish immigrants, Dennis came to DC from San Francisco in the '60s with $25 in his pocket and no idea what he wanted to do: "I'm the luckiest guy in the world because I've been able to constantly trick people into hiring me." His 45-year career has taken him to Burroughs, Xerox Data Systems, Storage Technology Corporation, Sybase, JB Cubed, ViON Corporation, and 3 PAR Data, along with a stint as the director of the Peace Corps in Liberia for two years and a year in Brazil as Chief Administrator of the Hospital Ship HOPE.

BUT CAN HE SEE RUSSIA?
Being one of the few Alaskan-native owned government contractors mean TKC Global has never-ending 8(a) status and no cap on the amount of small business set asides it can earn year-to-year. Intrigued? Us too, so we met with veep Dennis Lucey. TKC global is owned by Qivliq, an Inuit-owned company based in Anchorage. Thanks to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (addressing long-standing issues of aboriginal land claims in the '50s), Qivliq-as part of the NANA Development Corporation-receives contracting opportunities through the government. Among the many benefits: contracts with or without competition. "The tribe could stop receiving these advantages, but then the government would have to pay for almost all of Alaska," Dennis says.

He's also a big basketball fan (he went to the same college as Bill Russell) and tries to make it to the Final Four each year. He's also been married 35 years, amazing considering he tied the knot with his wife just 21 days after meeting her.

Peace Corps Online The Independent News Forum serving Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
| Support Independent Funding for the Third Goal The Peace Corps has always neglected the third goal, allocating less than 1% of their resources to "bringing the world back home." Senator Dodd addressed this issue in the "Peace Corps for the 21st Century" bill passed by the US Senate and Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter proposed a "Peace Corps Foundation" at no cost to the US government. Both are good approaches but the recent "Comprehensive Assessment Report" didn't address the issue of independent funding for the third goal at all. |
| Memo to Incoming Director Williams PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive. Latest: Greetings from Director Williams |
