HARTLAND- Lena Jenison from Hartland died in a car crash half a world away Tuesday, while she volunteered for the Peace Corps.
Lena Jenison made quite a name for herself at Arrowhead High School. Folks told TODAY'S TMJ4's Annie Scholz she was a star student, and a kind soul.
Lena's English teacher at Arrowhead told TODAY'S TMJ4, "We're going to miss her. She was special."
Arrowhead high school grad, Lena Jenison took part in plays and academic clubs. With a degree from UW-Madison, she decided to volunteer with the Peace Corps in Mozambique. That's where she was killed in a car accident Tuesday.
"What happened to her on the other side of the world in the peace corps tells us something about her. She would travel half way around the world to help other people, that's who she was," said Lena's English teacher Greg Budzien.
The news hit the town of Hartland, hard.
Her former acting teacher Maralynn Markano told TODAY'S TMJ4, "she just really had a giant heart, and her passing has left a big hole in all of our hearts too."
TODAY'S TMJ4's Annie Scholz spoke with Lena's father on the phone. He said the family was together and just trying to make it through. All the while, his family is on the minds of so many.
"We didn't have any kids of our own. We thought of the Arrowhead kids as ours. But I'll tell you, if I had a daughter that ended up like Lena, i would have been most proud," said English teacher Greg Budzien.

| Peace Corps: The Next Fifty Years As we move into the Peace Corps' second fifty years, what single improvement would most benefit the mission of the Peace Corps? Read our op-ed about the creation of a private charitable non-profit corporation, independent of the US government, whose focus would be to provide support and funding for third goal activities. Returned Volunteers need President Obama to support the enabling legislation, already written and vetted, to create the Peace Corps Foundation. RPCVs will do the rest. |
