M. Jeannie Harvey of Moscow, director of the state of Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps for the past five years, is the new director of the UI Women's Center, Dean of Students Bruce Pitman announced today.
"Jeannie brings an incredibly broad range of skills to the position as well as a thorough knowledge of the university and the state," Pitman said. "She will be a valuable addition to the Women's Center and the entire UI community."
Harvey, who earned her master's degree from the UI, has spent nearly her entire professional career working in non-profit organizations. Since 1994, she has served as director of the Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps, a national education-success program she helped establish in Idaho. An accomplished grant writer, she increased the budget for that program from $265,000 to more than $600,000 today.
"Since 1972 the Women's Center has been a vibrant contributor within the University of Idaho community," said Hal Godwin, Vice President for Student Affairs. "The addition of Director Jeannie Harvey, with her rich background, will undoubtedly enhance our offerings."
From 1987 to 1991, Harvey served as programming and training officer as well as deputy director for the Peace Corps in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1987, she served as a training officer for the Peace Corps' Inter-America Region in Washington, D.C.
Harvey attended the 1995 U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, and has attended numerous workshops on rural women, women and education, women and militarization, women and war, and women and the media. She has volunteered at domestic violence women's shelters in Hillsboro, Ore., and Eureka, Calif. Her graduate work focused on a gender study assessing women's perceptions of tourism development.
In addition, Harvey, who speaks fluent Spanish, has worked with the Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene, Shoshone Bannock and Kootenai tribes in Idaho to host AmeriCorps members.
