have.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

First of all, if not for the US Peace Corps I would never had the opportunity
to enroll at Bates College(Maine). My work with the Peace Corps provided
me enough funds to pay for my undergraduate education as well as a
great help so that I could go to graduate school. I went on to receive a
MAT degree from the School for International Training and later one a Ph.D
in Administration of Higher Education from Michigan State Univerty. While
conducting international programs of education for The Experiment (today
WorldLearning) I was offered a job as a Professor at the Federal University
of Paraiba, where I continued to working with international programs of
education. My 3 children were born here (Jennifer, born in
Brattleboro,Vermont in l979; Jonathan, born in East Lansing, Michigan, in
1984; and Jeffrey also born in East Lansing, in 1987).

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I always enjoyed interacting with my students and I still believe the work
the volunteers aimed at was a sublime one, a caring one, a needed one. A
job which would benefit both parties, not only the volunteer but also the
local people in the community. The Peace Corps was/is a venture - a
needed one, I might add. It provides opportunity for learning and growth.
My work with the US Peace Corps added a lot to my life and my life would
not have as fulfilling had I not worked with the Peace Corps in so many
capacities.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Any one who still remember me from those wonderful years. Especially,
Michael Albert Viola who served in Iuna,Espirito Santo in early 60's. Also,
Darline Ryther Braz who served in Espirito Santo 64-66.
There were 2 female RPCVS working at the Institute for International
Education/New York These two persons helped me a great deal early in
January 1968 when by coincidence I met them at IIE. Another coincidence,
they knew Michael Albert Viola, since they also served in Espirito
Santo(Ibelieve one of them is Darline Ryther, but I am not that sure. And
-please excuse-me, I forgot the name of the other person. At any rate, I
would love to talk with them.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

In 1999 I returned to my Peace Corps sites and it was so gratifying to find
that the program begun so many years ago and nurtured by so many Peace
Corps Volunteers was continuing to grow under the leadership of dedicated
Brazilians. It was still there and achieving its goals of healthier and better
educated children.

Needless to say it was a trip I will never forget. It was a trip into the past and
a look at the future. Old memories were reinforced and new experiences
savored. I was able to renew old friendships and make new ones as well.. The
Brazilian were so kind and generous and welcomed me wherever I went. For
me it was a confirmation of that the Peace Corps is a viable and effective
way to promote understanding and for people to work to together for a better
future.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

After grad school in economics, I've worked with several colleges, some in Indian Country and some not and with tribes in South Dakota and Iowa as teacher, grant writer, planner, and economic developer (and always a "student"). Patricia (>1/2)and I have three sons (late h.s., college, and just post-college age) who've worked abroad or traveled extensively. And so it goes.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

Oh, to be young again and heading to Brazil! It's hard to duplicate the sense of wonder and optimism we justifiably felt out of that opportunity ("great adventure" is more apt). I've discovered that the U.S. and Brazil seem different only in degree, and the degree ebbs and flows depending on whether there's a military dictatorship in power.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Dave Lowe, Charles Scriven, Peter Chirivas, Craig Toftey, Bill Myers, Phil Spray, and Che Guevara.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

I think the Peace Corps should be in Brazil again; Lula should be amenable. Contact me if I can help coordinate lobbying with Congress, etc. Dean Conrad's bro is senator from ND--that's a good place to start.

Changed my life ... opened many doors. Never really returned to the life I knew before. Always saw the world differently after Peace Corps. Persig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" view that perception determines reality and what is real depends on how you filter it through your own senses and experiences --- Peace Corps was and has been my filter on reality.

That was the beginning of my breaking out of the mold of academia: after another 30 years of working with my hands I feel it's actually possible to have a truly non-academic world-view.
