Arrival Year: 1966

Departure Year: 1968

Work Description: Science Teachers' Workshops

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

I am happy to report that my life since has been rather ordinary. I have an MA
which I only hang on my office wall. I am a husband and father, the two most
important things that I have done. I am self-employed, I practice as a Certified
Public Accountant.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

For quite a few years I saw this adventure as something that benefited me much
more than anyone or anything else. My view was that we would not make a
difference as I got onto the plane to go to India. This did not change as I got onto
the plane when I left, (that we did not make a difference). I recently found out
that I was wrong! Andra Pradesh, the state that we started the Workshops in,
this state that is thought to be the "boonies" by other Indians has some of the
highest secondary school science achievement scores in that delightful country.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

I want to hear from everyone who participated in the Science Teachers'
Workshops program. I, aslo, want to hear from everyone who worked in Nellore
District. Then there are those who did not work in Nellore District, but enjoyed the
hospitality of my home on Rajagari Street; I want to hear from you too.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Hey yo!

Worked with private farmers in six villages within Manvi Taluk. Also provided public

avoiding water pollution from insecticides and boiling water. Trained farmers in the
use of both chemical and organic fertilizers. .

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

Completed my B.A. degree at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter,
Minnesota in June, 1970; adopted Krishna Seeley with my wife Jane in July,
1972. I met Krishna in Bangalore in December, 1967 when he was age 10
and he lived with me onsite (with the permission of his mother) and was
extensively tutored in English and other primary grade subjects. After
completing my Peace Corps term I taught English at Lowry Memorial
Elementrary and High School for 6 months before returning to Minnesota.
After completing my undergraduate degree I worked in community and
environmental affairs at Northern States Power Company from 1971 to
1980. I graduated from Hamline University Law School in May, 1980 and
have been practicing law ever since. In 1991 I started my own law firm,
SEELEY LEGAL SERVICES, P.A., specializing in personal injury cases in
which I mainly represent recent immigrants from Laos, Vietnam, Somalia
and Mexico. Over 70% of my clients are recent immigrants. Jane and I
also have a wonderful daughter, Carey Ann, who is now a first grade
teacher, and two beautiful grandchildren, Ravi(age 12) and Arun (age 6
months). Our grandchildren are the children of our son Krishna and his
lovely wife Savetri (born in Ghania, South America).

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

My two years in the Peace Corps was a real turning point in my life. It
offered a wonderful time to learn a new culture and language; to try out
new problem solving techniques; to read and learn; to travel and to meet a
host of wonderful, interesting people from India.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Other PCVs from India 38 or other volunteers who served in Raichur
District, Kannataka.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Life is an adventure: wake up every day with a spirit of adventure, but
brace yourself for delays, frustrations and slow progress in achieving your
work goals as a PCV. Be culturally alert to different (and similar) values,
decision making styles, time orientation, and priorities. The world is a very
diverse place, and Americans are in the minority! We should be proud of
our life style, values, political and religious freedom; but don't expect the
rest of the world to think and act like Americans. Be true to your own
values while respecting those of other peoples.

Other Countries you served in, Training Group Name Arrival Year, Departure Year, Work
Description:

assigned alone to teacher training schools after 2 months in country
training following a month at Brattleboro/Putney, Vermont. Also trained
in new group summer of '70 in Bangalore, (I think it was an English
teaching group)

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

Since 1987, I've worked for the U.S. Senate - Senator Conrad in ND
providing constituent services, emphasis on refugee/immigration
issues. Previously I was Exec Dir of the Mental Health Assoc for several
counties and taught at the university.
I have two grown sons; my husband, who was a PCV in Afghanistan,
recently died of a brain tumor. While he served in the state legislature, I
registered as a lobbyist on mental heatlh issues.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

It was the best decision I ever made; the experience has made a
difference in my entire life; it is like yesterday; I love Indian food and
read books about India but have never returned; just before 9/11 I got a
10 yr visa to visit India, but now have not gone; we were going when we
retired; I'm not sure why we waited.
The daughter in my host family in Madras during training is now in DC.
I'm looking forward to visiting and also returning to India.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Anyone from I-57; we should have shared SS# or some way to reconnect
in future years. My best friend Gladys Gilbert from I-57 died in plane
crash in Africa on flight with Congressman Mickey Leland. Another Ruth
Maschmeier recently returned to Wisconsin after years of teaching in
Japan.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

We need to preserve our experiences, either in state heritage societies
or at the Smithsonian; I wish I would have kept a diary; all volunteers
should know how important it will be to them someday and for history. I
asked a fellow volunteer in Afghanistan to write about the group my
husband, John, was in and he instead did a video recollection and sent
pictures - what a treasure. Even at this late date we can record what we
know.
