Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
The Peace Corps certainly changed my life. As a kid growing up in South
Jersey, I was attracted to what was to me the exotic language and culture
of the Puerto Rican's settling in the '50s in my little town on the edge of the
pine barrens. The Peace Corps allowed me to follow this facination with
how different and simultaneously similar two world views can be. I still
enjoy the process of entering, with permission, another's world view. Each
person or family that I work with as a therapist allows me to re-experience
this. And I am aware today, just as I was in Ecuador, of my role somtimes
as a bridge between cultures.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I got back last June, came to NY as a PC recruiter the day before 9/11. Lost
my office but kept my sanity. I want to do everything: act, teach, be on
Sesame Street, have kids, travel, dance, pay off the rest of my student
loans, go to Brazil, etc.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Those three years in Ecuador taught me so much, so much that I am still
trying to bring it all together. I learned to see how others see us. I also
learned patience and what true friendship is. To tell the truth, I also learned
that though having money doesn't guarantee you happiness, being
destitute and fighting for your physical survival can cause us to do things
we normally wouldn't do. Last thing: I really love the Peace Corps Nurses!!
They really took care of me!!
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
I still keep in contact with my friends. Anyone who wants to talk is welcome
to contact me. Even if I never met you, You may contact me or stop by the
new Peace Corps office in West Village, Manhattan.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
What a journey, and let's not forget what we learned overseas.
Unfortunately too many of us come back and act as if we never learned
anything while in the Peace Corps--never forget the Third Goal! What good
is to learn how to successfully communicate with host country nationals ,
yet be totally inept at communicating with our own neighbors and
co-workers here?

Homeland Security Dept. In 1996, I taught ESL for University of Mobile,AL
in San Marcos, Nicaragua. I spent four years as a Public School Teacher(math and Spanish)in the New Orleans area.
After I left the Peace Corps in 1967, I got an MS in Economics and taught at Limestone College in Gaffney,SC. I found teaching too "removed" from the world I had known in Ecuador. After another year of graduate study, this time in urban and regional planning, I took a position in Columbia, SC working for the Governor's Office of Regional and State Land Use and Environmental Issues. I also worked as a Regional Planner for the Ministry of Urban Affairs in Canada until I moved to Washington, D.C. in January of 1976. In D.C., I worked for Secretary Joe Califano at the Health and Human Resources Dept.and for Dept. of Energy. In 1981, I moved to Mobile, AL and started a family. I have two girls and boy(ages:15-21).

Don't be afraid to start life. Don't feel so separated--- we have a lot to contribute and I've found people to be genuinely interested in hearing about what we've done. Remember that 3rd goal. It's so easy to slip back into life here (this is what I've found), and we must not forget the lessons we've learned, and continue to share. It seems to be a constant effort.
