Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I took a Ph.D. Economic and Social Development and completed the Dissertation in 1974. Since I became a sever diabetic in 1969, I could not get through the physcial to go back to Africa. So I became a professor at California State University, Chico. I taught statistics, Research Methods, and Public Finance for 32 years. I retired in the spring of 2003.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
This was an experience that changed my life entirely. I felt that I build more confidence in myself, and that I became a more open person than I had been. I felt also that I have adopted view of the world that focuses on trying to change things. That, of course, is a bit idealistic. But I have had a lot of students graduate from the University and gone on to become political people and have had successful careers.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Yes, I'd like to hear from Dick Lipez, John Collins, Russ Scoville and those who were in the first group to go Debre Markos. That was an interesting group of people.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
You folks have done a good job, and your work is very important for helping others. You should be more rewarded than you are now, especially since the current leadership in Washington is so guilty. This is written in 2003. Hopefully we will have a different administration after the November 2004 elections, but as we know from Florida that is a gamble.
