I am trying to locate Marc Cicero who was in Hondouras in 1998 or 1999 I think. My name is Monte Short and I was there with another group of folks who were building houses for the people of Monjaras. If anyone can help me contact him I would really really appreciate it. I am going to go back down there and want to talk to Marc first.

Country of Service: Honduras
Training Group: 15 (?)
Cities you served in: Tegucigalpa
Arrival Year: 1972
Departure Year: 1974
Work Description: Set up Biology Majors Program at the National Autonomous
University of Honduras
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
After Peace Corps I stayed in Honduras and I am still living here. I have
worked for 30 years at the National Unviersity teaching ecology. I helped
write the Honduran Environmental Law and when the Honduran Ministry
of the Environment was created, I worked for 5 years as technical
advisor to the Minister of the Environment (1992-1997)where I was in
charge of writing and implementing the Environmental Impact
Assessment regulations. Over the years, I have done environmental
consulting for USAID, UNDP and the World Bank. I am currently working
for CARE Honduras as Food Security Coordinator and Environmental
Advisor.
My daugheter was born in Honduras and is now an environmental
engineer working on the IDB Bay Islands Environmental Management
Project. My daughter and I are black belts in Tae Kwon Do and give a self
defense class to Peace Corps Trainees.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Peace Corps changed my life. I expected to be in Honduras for two
years, but I never left. My Peace Corps days were challenging and
wonderful. My Peace Corps assignment was to set up a Biology Majors
program at the National Unviersity, and I got to travel all over Honduras
with my students studying the different ecosytems with their rich
biodiversity and trying to figure out how to conserve the primitive areas.
It is extremely rewarding to see the success of my ex-students who
were instrumental in establishing the system of Protected Area in
Honduras and who now hold high posts in government, industry and
NGOs. I wouldn't change my life for anything.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
People from my group, but I don't remember what my group number
was.

Country of Service: Honduras
Training Group: community development
Cities you served in: La Ceiba
Arrival Year: 1983
Departure Year: 1985
Work Description: I worked with a women's sewing coop
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Since returning from Honduras in 1985, I did a few stints with Fed agencies in Washington (my home town), lived a nomadic life in San Francisco, Guadalajara, Mexico and London before returning to WDC and working in staff training at PC headquarters in 1992. I left headquarters for graduate studies, receiving a Masters in Social Work (MSW), from Catholic University of America, WDC. I worked three years in the DC child neglect and abuse court system before moving to Germany where I educate overseas Americans about family violence prevention. This is how I pay my rent! Off hours I am working on a "photography calling," having had three solo exhibitions: two in Germany, one in Finland and individual works have been displayed in Luxembourg City, Lux. In fact, some of my photographs of children in Managua, Nicaragua have been exhibited and two were sold. I am making final touches to my photography website and welcome to have RPCV's on my slowmail and email mailing list to send them announcements of my latest creative venture. I have one commercial assignment for now but put most of my focus on: praying for peace on earth and finding employment and artistic outlets in Paris - to do my own version of George Orwell's, "Down and Out in London and Paris (or is it Paris and London?)." My mailing address is: Im Leuchensang 64, 54634 Bitburg, ph. # 011 (from USA) 49.6561.670258. I am 15 minutes from the Luxembourg border...come and visit! It is beautiful and civilized here! As Thomas Wolfe said, You Can't Go Back Home Again." How true. How true. Europe is my playground, my spiritual and creative universe. Moving to Europe has become the second best gift to myself. I suspect it will be, like with Peace Corps, the gift that keeps giving. Warm regards to the PC family - in all its quirks, differences and beauty.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
One of the best gifts that I gave myself. It was a long term dream, since childhood, to be a volunteer. It was one of the most significant journeys into myself and the world around me. Peace Corps is perhaps the best, albeit imperfect, foreign policy program between Americans and our fellow citizens of the world.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Sure. Would welcome hearing from the April, 1983 Honduras training group. I only have contact with one from my group, and just recently heard from another, via her coming across my website.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I spent a few years trying to plant my feet on the ground after returning home. I temped, taught elementary school, and worked as a park ranger. I then decided to put in for the long haul and started the long road toward becoming a doctor. I am currently at the University of Viginia, and am hoping to organize a research project in Honduras for this coming summer.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I feel very fortunate to have been shipped off to San Esteban by the Peace Corps. While the town has it's share of problems, I ended up feeling very much at home there. I would never have ended up in medical school were it not for some very special role models I met in town. I hope someday in the distant future to follow in their footsteps as a community doctor.

Work Description:
Credit and consumer cooperatives
Other Countries you served in, Training Group Name Arrival Year, Departure Year, Work Description:
Served only in Honduras. Arrived for training in Ponce on April 1, 1971 (can't remember # of group, etc.). Arrived in Honduras in early July 1971 and lived in Choluteca. I left Honduras in early September 1973 (just prior to hurricane Fifi, which hit north coast). I originally worked in Choluteca with Facach, the Honduran government agency overseeing credit co-ops, but moved over to Caritas (still in PC) and worked with consumer co-ops in the south.
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I am a retired banker/CFO living in Bangkok, Thailand. I have been married for 28 years, meeting my Thai/American wife in grad school in Dallas.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
We went in thinking we would be able to give a great deal, but in the end I think we got out of it more than we ever could give. It was a great experience.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Anyone in Honduras between 1971 and 1973.

I, on behalf of the Bernhard family, am looking for a woman who is believed to be named Stephanie. She served in the Peace Corp in Tegucigalpa Honduras at some point during the years 1985-2002. She is believed to have had a son with José Reuben Bernhard Sánchez. His family heard she had returned to Honduras looking for Jose and left before they could find her. They have been searching for her and her son for many many years. Please, if you are Stephanie or if you know her whereabouts, please contact me so I can give her further details. Thank you.
