Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

After earning an M.Sc. at the London School of Economics on my way
back from the Peace Corps, I went to Duke for a PhD in Political Science
and then earned an M.P.H. from the School of Public Health of the
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill during post-doctoral studies.
Since then I have taught & conducted research at several Universities in
the U.S. My focus has mainly been on domestic health policy and health
politics. However, I have maintained a great avocational interest in
Central Asia and will teach a course "Understanding Central Asia" for the
first time this fall. Several years ago I led the first delegation of RPCVs
back to Iran in the first NPCA-Friendship Force collaboration. I would like
to refocus on international/global issues and would love to have a
chance to work abroad.

Great learning experience. Still wish the Peace Corps had sent me where I had greater strengths. When they couldn't place you to use your training and experience, they made an English teacher out of you. C'est la vie. Still appreciated being able to learn another language and find out that not all the world revolves around the U.S.

Cities you served in: Bam

Arrival Year: 1966

Departure Year: 1968

Work Description:

Teacher

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

After Peace Corps service my wife (Sarah Jane) and I began teaching in Nanakuli and working in the Hawaiian community. I'm now retired and heavily involved in racing outrigger canoes. Sarah is still teaching here in Waianae. Our son is a professional surfer, and our daughter is entering law school.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I was greatly saddened when I heard about the recent earthquake that destroy the city where we served (Bam). Looking at pictures of the devastation I couldn't help but wonder what happened to the teachers and students we knew 35 years ago. I think about the easy way in which we traveled through the world in those days (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan) and think about all we have lost in the last few years. We need another JFK in the White House, not another Bush.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Anyone from our training group (the one's who were shot at from the tower in Austin).

By America's Unofficial Ambassadors (65.199.27.1) on Wednesday, October 05, 2011 - 3:55 pm: Edit Post

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.

The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned]. For more information visit: http://unofficialambassadors.com/get-involved/buil ding-peace-by-building-homes/, or contact AUA trip leader, Andrew Stinson, at AndrewS@creativelearning.org
