March '91. Contracted as the Program Developer / Instructional
Coordinator at the College of Micronesia-FSM Pohnpei Campus from
March '96 to September '98. Moved to Takoma Park, MD and worked as
Volunteer Coordinator at Christmas in April, DC. Now live in Washington,
DC and work as Special Assistant at the Presidential Task Force on
Employment of Adults with Disabilities.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
A complete, for lack of a better word, and full experience which stays
with me still, in memories I recall everyday and that I continue to enjoy
sharing with people.

I would love to hear from others who were volunteers in Kiribati or are
currently volunteers.

Worked as a research limnologist for the Wisonsin Department of
Natural Resources from 94-95. Started a Ph.D. program in aquatic
ecology at Dartmouth College in 1995. Expected to defend my
dissertation in spring/summer 2002.
Kris and I now have a son, Carl Joseph, who was born in Oct. of 2000.
The 3 of us are healthy and happy in East Thetford, VT.

A wonderful experience that we look back on frequently. The warm
and friendly people of Beru and Tabiteuea taught us much about the
value of real conversation and caring.

I still look back with great fondness on my PC experience, and recently

After service I traveled to Fiji and New Zealand. It was in New Zealand I met my future husband. Upon returnig to the states I followed my heart to Oregon. My husband is a smokejumper here in Oregon. We got enganged in Belize New Years Eve 2001 and we were married November 23, 2002. I am now pursing a career in nursing. I miss Kiribati everyday and count my lucky starts that I had the oppurtunity to live in utopia.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
It was one of the most rewarding experinces I have ever had and would recommend the Peace Corps to everyone!

Upon returning to Michigan I taught in a 5th grade classroom 1 year, completed a MA in Counseling, and moved to Minnesota where I met my fiancee, Kim. We will be married on June 28, 2003. I currently work as an international student counselor and advisor at the University of Minnesota and am working on a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Administration with a focus in international educational exchange.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I look back upon my experience in Kiribati with fondness and plan to return for a visit within the next few years. My experiece as a PCV had a profound impact on my decision to work in the field of international education.

Having been a serious traveler for over 25 years, I have never encountered a country remotely similar to Kiribati. It was a challenging and liberating experience. Now that I know I can survive in a country that has virtually nothing except fish and coconuts,I know I can survive anywhere.
