We understand your objection to email format - however, we would receive many more objections if we made it simple for spambots to harvest all the addresses - Admin1

I've been teaching in a middle school a few blocks away from home for
thirty years - enjoy it tremendously and do not intend to retire. Have
been married for thirty-three years and, again, do not plan to retire.
Have two grown daughters who are quite splendid and living real close.
New York (Manhattan) continues to be splendid and terrible but I couldn't
live anywhere else - most specifically right near Columbia University.
Have been making and teaching potteryfor over twenty years and am
connected with a pottery school/gallery called Supermud. Became a
blond (with dark roots) for my sixtieth birthday. I'm feeling and looking
good and attribute a lot to Buddhism.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

An amazing time of my life in an particularly terrific country. I returned
recently (to visit a daughter doing her semester abroad at Alhakwayn
University in Ifran. Morocco looks seedier than it did when I lived there
but the essence of the country, the sounds, smells, the people, remain
the same. I look forward to going back again.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

A chance meeting at the Summer Institute of English in Rabat with Dr.
James Coady, the former graduate chair in Linguistics at Ohio University,
lead to a teaching assistanceship and full tuition scholarship at that
university. Following graduation, my husband (a Moroccan) and I made
Morocco and Italy our destinations on a celebratory vacation. On our return,
I accepted a teaching position in the ESL department of Arkansas State
University.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

The Peace Corps was a transformational experience. The opportunity to be
in service, to set someone else's needs above ego and agenda was both
humbling and exhilarating. Creatively, professionally, personally, and
spiritually, it was intensely validating, and taxed every limit I thought I had,
before pushing me passed those limits entirely. Morocco itself is a
fascinating, kalaidescopic environment. One might be lonely, but never
bored. Every view held tantalizing, often heartwarming detail.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Don't forget how easy it was to adapt to a sparce, essentials-only
environment, and how, from that perspective, the view of life was much
clearer.

An excellent opportunity to expand my horizons and intimately experience other ways of doing and seeing things. I was able to understand that our culture has certain ways of viewing the world, and that those views are not universal necessarily universal. It was only after returning home that I understood the importance of experiencing other cultures as a way of understanding the United States at deeper level.

By America's Unofficial Ambassadors (65.199.27.1) on Wednesday, October 05, 2011 - 4:02 pm: Edit Post

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.

The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned]. For more information visit: http://unofficialambassadors.com/get-involved/buil ding-peace-by-building-homes/, or contact AUA trip leader, Andrew Stinson, at AndrewS@creativelearning.org.
