It has been slightly less than 2 years since I COS'd. I travelled for 8
months, then went to Guatemala to study Spanish, and then moved to
Quito where I taught English at the Fulbright Commission. Currently I
am temping in the Seattle Peace Corps office and trying to figure out
my next direction. I want to return to PC but this time as a health care
educator and want to spend a year or two in the States getting more
experience in this field beyond having taught first aid for many years.
I'd particularly like to be involved in health care issues with our
Hispanic communities.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I have great enthusiasm for my PC years--if only it weren't so darned
hot in the PPs. However I learned that when I am busy, I can ignore a
lot of difficulties and focus on what I'm trying to do.

Well, in a nutshell, upon returning to the U.S. I did a masters in Food and
Resource Economics at the University of Florida. There were 8 or 10 of us
in the department who were ex-PC Philippines during the same period
('76-'79). Florida was followed by a couple of years with the U.S. Soil
Conservation Service in Missouri. USAID offered me an assignent back in
Manila so back we came. After a year or so I joined the Asian
Development Bank in 1985 and have been here ever since. My work at
ADB has involved the processing and administration of agricultural and
microfinance projects in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, PRC, Indonesia, Mongolia
and the Philippines. My wife Virgie and I will be celebrating our 23rd
anniversary this year. I'm sure she is fondly remembered by many
ex-PCVs from the Philippines as the best nurse they've ever met. We
have 2 great "ankle biters" - Leila (19)and Jason (16).

Work Description: TESL teacher

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

AFter the Peace Corps, I continued to work for not-for-profits, both for pay
and as a volunteer. My work for the past 32 years has been in higher
education, first as an editor, then a grad program administrator, and
finally as a fund raiser for Cornell University and, now, Ithaca College. In
all cases, my work with the Peace Corps helped shape my commitment to
the nfp sector and to issues of access for the poorest in our world.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

My first thought on hearing about the attacks on the WTC and the
Pentagon was that our fellow citizens would not understand the great
anger and fear that led to such terrorist attacks. "Why the U.S." is not an
easy question to answer for anyone, but how much more so if one has not
thought at all about life beyond the borders of one's community. I was
fortunate in the Peace Corps to have been one of two women assigned to
live in Marawi (the center of Islam at the time in Mindanao) while teaching
at an experimental university bringing Christians and Muslims together.
The idealism of the time and the sense of a "melting pot" ideology gave
great promise. The years and increased armed response by both
Christians and Muslim have shown how fleeting and even misbegotten
those hopes were. Nonetheless, I know that there are those of all faiths in
that area who seek peace. In that knowledge I find great hope, all because
the Peace Corps program gave me the privilege to experience first hand
the perspectives of other cultures.

Enjoying as a Science Teacher at a Middle School in San Antonio, TX. Also
actively involved with: *The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers(RPCV'S) of
San Antonio; *The Karilagan Philippine Cultural Group, where my wife,
Lourdes ( former Peace Corps Phil. trainer ), and our son, PJ, are active
members.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

The Peace Corps was a wonderful experience--I gained and developed
more( with all the learnings and challenges), as a person, and glad to have
made a small difference! I loved my stay in the Philippines. I've been
married for 27 years to Lourdes Dato-on, a Peace Corps trainer ( indeed,
she trained me well ), and had our son, PJ, during my Peace Corps service.
Our Peace Corps experience led us to continue working for people
development. My wife & I worked with the United Nations/ICMC Refugee
Resettlement Program after my tour of duty. Our son later became an
AmeriCorps/City Year Volunteer before completing his college. Yes, Peace
Corps has been a big stepping stone and a blessing to a rewarding and rich
life for me and my loved ones. I continue to share this as my RPCV mission,
to fulfill the 3rd goal of Peace Corps; grateful & proud to have served!

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Yes, any member from my original Group 77 esp. Barry & Terry. Also
friends from another group, Rollin & Betty Heller, and Richard Freeman.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Arrival Year: 1997

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

I first travelled to Nepal to escape the heat of the Philippines and then went to
Guatemala to study Spanish for 2 months prior to moving to Quito, Ecuador to
teach English with the Fulbright Commission. I hadn't taught English prior to
going to the Philippines and wanted to get that experience. Upon returning to
the US, last July, after 4 years abroad I decided to get additional experience
in health education with the hopes of returning to PC in 5 years and serving in
another country in that field. Health seems more of a basic need than English
to me and would probably facilitate my learning and using the country's
language more.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

It was a tremendous growing experience for me and I look forward to doing it
again.

Philippines 14-15 1965-1967 San Jose, Antique

I met up with Roger Larson and we were wondering what happened to some of our fellow volunteers. We have contact with Leslie Pelton and Carolyn Christensen West, but were curious about Barry Weisenfeld, Richard Thibodoux, Judy Hoss, and Jerry Rosenberg. Maybe a few others too, but at least the local tong. Drop a line if you have info.

Hello,

I'm currently a Peace Corps Response Volunteer serving in the Philippines. A friend of mine is looking to re-connect with a volunteer who served in Aklan Province (Panay Island) in 1975. The volunteer's name was Toni Lavelle.

If anyone knows how I might put my friend in contact with Toni, please e-mail me. Thank you!

Philippines 14 - University of the Philippines College of Agriculture/UPRural High School (1965-1968)
Big news: one of my former students, Emerlinda Ramos Roman, was just named Outstanding Filipino of the Year. Emer was also president of the university. She was in the Class of 1966 at UPRural High School. Like any teacher, I'm so gratified that I contributed my small part to her education.
