Mame Sylla,
I remember you, too! I am Lisa Maggiore, and was in the Forestry/Health training group in 1989. I was there with Amy Stephenson, Neil Patterson, Bob Ament, Cindy Salo, Jim Edelblut, and others. They used to call me Oulleymata N'diaye because I am a big gal like she was. I am now a teacher in California and fondly remember my days in Senegal. I went back once to visit in 1995 and saw you at the training center. What are you doing now? My email is peacefish1@mac.com. (peacefish1 at mac dot com)

I am very sad as I let you know about the loss of a dear CDC colleague and friend, Dr. Kellie Lartigue. Dr. Lartigue, who was serving as the Global AIDS Program (GAP) Country Director in Mali, passed away this morning from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. She had been the Country Director in Mali since 2004, after serving for several years as a country support officer for GAP.
Dr. Lartigue joined CDC in 1997 and served for five years within the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention’s Capacity Building Branch as a training specialist and a public health analyst. After that, she dedicated her life to international public health. Her international public health experience began in 1988 when she served as a primary health care program coordinator with the U.S. Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa. Early in 1993, she moved to Kigali, Rwanda, to join the National Institutes of Health-funded research efforts of the University of California at San Francisco’s Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (UCSF/CAPS), where she managed the daily operations and community outreach activities of a voluntary HIV testing and counseling center for couples and a medical clinic.
During Dr. Lartigue’s tenure, Mali made significant progress in its battle against HIV/AIDS. Among the many accomplishments include the number of HIV counseling and testing centers rising more than 50 percent to total of 44, in the past two years. Also under her tenure, the Ministry of Health validated the first national guidelines for counseling and testing; vast improvements were made in existing HIV counseling and testing services for TB patients; and the public health laboratory infrastructure was greatly strengthened through implementation of standardized testing algorithms. Perhaps the greatest strides though were in improvements to Mali’s national surveillance program. Dr. Lartigue established a strong working collaboration with her counterparts at USAID and Peace Corps in Mali in order to establish a system for HIV and STI surveillance in a coordinated fashion according to a planned calendar. These accomplishments have enhanced CDC’s reputation as a distinguished public health agency.
Dr. Lartigue has received several accolades for her international work. Most recently, she was recognized with a NCHHSTP Silo Busters Award for her role in the CDC Avian Influenza Group, a collaborative, high profile network of CDC staff that formed to respond to urgent calls by countries for help detecting, preparing for, and responding to outbreaks of AI H5N1.
Dr. Lartigue earned a master’s degree in international administration from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, and was fluent in French and Wolof.
Dr. Lartigue is survived by her husband and three young children. Our hearts go out to her family and friends in this time of great loss. A true public health advocate and professional, Dr. Lartigue will be sorely missed. I hope that you will join me in reflecting on the legacy of this great employee. She, as well as her tireless international work for CDC, will be forever remembered.
Julie Louise Gerberding, M.D., M.P.H.

Hi, I'm looking for Jean Richter, who was a volunteer working with elephants in Niokolo Koba about 1990-1993. She sent me info on her work in the park when I was getting ready to return to Senegal in 2002. I've recently passed the info on to another researcher and would like to thank her again, but I can't locate her. Does anyone know how to get in touch with Jean? (Hard to believe we can still lose touch with people, even with email, Google, cell phones...)

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.
The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned]. For more information visit: http://unofficialambassadors.com/get-involved/buil ding-peace-by-building-homes/, or contact AUA trip leader, Andrew Stinson, at AndrewS@creativelearning.org.

My name is Mbayang Ndiaye and I'm looking for volunteers who served as English teachers in St Louis in Senegal between 1971 and 1980 and who lived at Block 16 in Corniche where I was a resident too. I was very close to the Peace Corps volunteers and they greatly influenced my life and my love for English as an 11 year old young girl then. Most of the volunteers were known to us by their Senegalese names, however I remember 1 African American lady by the name of Cynthia and an African American guy called Ian and another African American lady who married a Senegalese guy called Seck who was from Thies. There was also a very nice gentleman called Dennis or Martin who used to accompany me to do the shopping at the local market. I will be thrilled to hear from any of you.
