Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

It was a chance to become involved in something useful and give me a
chance to go to travel. I had never traveled and I knew I liked people. It
turned out to be an unimaginably wonderful experience that gave me
more than I probably was able to give. I became a better person with
more ability to see and understand people. I grew inside. I gained
insight in myself. I was able to do things I will never be able to
experience again in my life. Things that even today I reflect back on in
my own mind. I am able to share some of my experiences with my
students. I hope I am able to continue to give because of my
experiences.

Yes, I would really like to get intouch with some of the teachers I taught

Salinee. I don't know her current last name. She taught English at the
same college I did and spent some time in the US while I was in Korat.
Her father was a judge in Bankok. I have her unmarried name and must
look it us. If I can find it in a reasonable time I will forward it to you. She
is a person I really would like to get in touch with.

I am doing resume writing and just created my own company. I recently
met a 45 year old Thai woman and I am helping her with her resume. We
bonded immediately and she spent a day at my house. Our spiritual
connection was awesome and we felt like sisters. I am now 52 years old. I
was in the PC when I was only 23!I have been in touch with Peggy Podlich
and we spoke a couple of weeks ago, as I called her about the Thai woman
I was hoping to help her get an executive level job. She is working for her
father's friend in a Thai restaurant in Nyack, NY and she has been in the US
less than ten months. She is a very bright woman, now trying to help her
father out financially.........

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I was much more liberal then, I've become a lot more conservative since those days. Had I not joined the Peach Corps, I think I would still be pretty liberal and less patriotic. I miss a lot of what made day to day Thailand unique. You know, many of the nuances and quirks of Thai people that annoyed me then, I sure miss now. I also miss how easily I dropped the poundage. I ate ice cream everyday and still managed to lose weight, now I breathe and gain weight!

Returned Peace Corps Volunteer William Preston can be contacted at williamdprestonapearsoneddcom

Country of Service: Thailand

Training Group: Thai 58

Cities you served in: Yala, Sukhothai, Phitsanuloke, Bangkok

Arrival Year: 1977

Departure Year: 1980

Work Description:

Year 1, I worked as an English teacher at a Thai government secondary school in Yala province. Year 2, I joined the Thai Ministry of Education's Regional Supervisory Unit, and worked as an English teacher and teacher trainer for in secondary schools in Sukhothai and Phitsanuloke provinces. In addition to teaching English secondary students, another volunteer and I organized intensive English language workshops and seminars for Thai secondary teachers of English. Year 3, I worked as a teacher and trainer at the British Council in Bangkok, as part of a consortium involving the Peace Corps, Thai Ministry of Education, and the British Council. Another volunteer and I taught 9-week intensive English seminars for Thai secondary English teachers. We also observed teachers after the seminars.

Other Countries you served in, Training Group Name Arrival Year, Departure Year, Work Description:

None, but I was also a VISTA worker (community organizer) from 1970-72 in Yonkers, New York, working for the Westchester Legal Aid Society.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

I reveived an MA in ESL from the University of Hawaii immediately following Peace Corps (1980-81). From 1881-82, I worked as an ESL supervisor in Galang, Indonesia, for a consortium including the Experiment in International Living, Save the Children, and the U.S. Department of State. I trained Indonesian teachers who taught English and cross-cultural education to Vietnamese refugees who were scheduled for resettlement in the US. I worked as an ESL supervisor for Cathloic Charities Diocese of Stockton, California for one year after leaving Galang. Then I taught English in a private language school in Spain in 1984. I returned to teh US in 1985, and begain working as an editor for various educational publishers, including Prentice Hall, Scholastic, Oxford University Press, and McGraw-Hill. I currently work for Pearson Education in White Plains, where I have been a senior editor since 1998.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I still look back most fondly on my years in Thailand and believe they were among the most meaningful in my life. Certainly, I couldn't do the work I do now, writing and editing ESL textbooks and materials, without the firsthand knowledge and experience I got working with Thai teachers and students. I always picture them when I'm working on English materials for international students.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

I would like to get in touch with Kevin Quigley, whom I just learned is the new president of NPCA. He and I worked together in Sukhothai and Phitsanuloke in Thailand in 1999 as part of the Regional Supervisory Unit. We kept in touch for a time after Peace Corps, but we both seem like people who change jobs often, so I lost touch. I'd love to congratulate him on his new job with Peace Corps!

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Sure: Contratulations to Kevin Quigley on his new job with Peace Corps! I've tried to track you down at the Asia Society and elsewhere, but you move too quickly (I should talk, having worked for several different publishers in the past 18 years). Anyway, I'd love to hear from you and catch up on what's been happening. All the best, for sure!

After four years in Hawaii and 25 years in Oregon teaching English and obtaining master's degree, have retired and returned back home to Seattle, WA area. Studied with Ursula LeGuin and got inspired to try my hand at fantasy writing to go along with my poetry.

I wouldn't take a million dollars for the experience, but you couldn't pay me a million to do it again.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Most members of our groups (Thai III and IV) have stayed in touch. Would like to trade war stories with Neil Weintraub whose group trained with ours in Hilo.

Any message for returned volunteers?:

Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Jo Ann C. Starker can be contacted at jostarkerayahoodcom

Country of Service: Thailand

Cities you served in: Songkhla and Bangkok

Arrival Year: 1966

Departure Year: 1968

Work Description:

Worked with Peace Corps Office in Bangkok in administration as volunteer. Served in Peace Corps Office in Songkhla and also taught English Shorthand at Jr. College in Songkhla.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:

After two-year tour in Thailand, returned home and gave birth nine months later to child I conceived when saying goodbye to Peace Corps volunteer boyfriend. After a couple of years, I accepted a position with Peace Corps Regional Recruitment Office in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved there. Met an ex-PCV and married him. We moved to New Hampshire where we worked with "Gifted but Emotionally Disturbed Children," for a year. We eventually ended up in Indiana where I gave birth to my second child, decided to go to college, and graduated some years later with a Master's Degree in Counseling. I worked at a community college in Indiana for over twenty years in advising, raised the kids, had grandkids, retired, and moved with the ex-PCV husband to Florida where I planned to write best sellers. I spent a month in England and Scotland for inspiration, visiting with a British friend who served with the British Corps back in that little town in Thailand in the sixties. Unfortunately, after two months of steady writing, I was bored with my own words, so I took a position with a community college in Florida. I still write. And I intend to retire again someday.

Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:

I believe every young person in the United States should be given the opportunity to spend a couple of years in another country.

Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:

Dave Davenport was a friend who served in Thailand from 1967-69, I believe. And Paul Latiolais did not serve in Thailand, but in another country. I'm having trouble remembering last names.

I was in Thai 90 from 1987-1989. While returning to visit Chum Phon in Southern Thailand, I became aware of an orphanage that receives little to no government support.

They don't need money per se but they do need a group of I'd say about 10 folks to come and do some work.
There are garden beds that need to be built, and existing beds that need fertilizer. There is carpentry that needs to be done like fixing the pig pen so the pigs can't get out.
They have a fish pond but are having some die off that I think might be due to quite a bit of algae on top of the water so we could use a fisheries person.
Also, could use women to organize donations and help re-thatch some roofs that are leaking.
I'd like to go from November 1-14th this year.
Let me know at isaacsmommie@sbcglobal.net if you are interested.
