practiced architecture for 25 years, with a year in Nigeria for their

and architectural photography since 1990.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I was in Togo for just six weeks in 1966 before suffering a nervous
breakdown and being returned to the States. The Peace Corps was and is
the best single thing I ever did in my life: it taught me to respect other
nations, their people and their culture and to appreciate the beauty in all
peoples, acknowledging the youth of our own nation.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
M. Frederic Body Lawson of Lome, Togo, our Togolese trainer who worked
with us in Norman, Oklahoma in 1966, and then directed our fisheries
program in Togo from 1966-1968. I did visit him in 1975 when I drove over
from Nigeria.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
Stay in love with your home country and spread the word. You are rare.
Even with increased tourism and study abroad programs, few Americans
will ever live with the people of a third-world nation as you have. You have
almost certainly seen a beauty of spirit, community and sharing that will
lift like fog once home. Apply what you know and make our world better so
more Americans will understand. Fly the UN flag a bit more. Stay in touch
with the world you left behind. Be active in your Friends Of community and
listen to the stories of the other RPCVs...to expand your own global
awareness. Each perspective is unique...but stem all from the same blue
marble.

Work Description:
I don't think "training group" was a term used during my years of
service. I trained at Howard University in Washington, D.C., with the
first group sent to French West Africa--Togo, Senegal and Niger. I
think I was one of the volunteers whose records were lost in a fire
at PC headquarters during the Nixon administration, so I treasure
the letter President Kennedy sent to thank the volunteers who
served during the early years.
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I volunteered to teach in Israel for one year after the June 1967
war. I was an editor for Girl Scouts of the USA for a number of years
and later became a lawyer. Now I am an administrative law judge
for the New York City Department of Health. When Friends of Togo
was first organized, was a Board member. In the 1980s, after more
than a 20 year absence, I returned to visit Togo but have been fairly
out of touch in recent years.
