Gary Liebert's Homepage

Greetings! I included the photo above because it reminded me of my 2 years in Zaire as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1980's. I lived in Bolenge, near the regional capital of Mbandaka, in the heart of the rainforest. This photo was taken from the CARPE homepage.

I'm now a student at Florida State University, studying in the Adult Education program.

My research interests include nonformal education in Francophone Africa, capacity building for non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations, and training and literacy issues.

Since 2001, I've been working on my prospectus and it was approved by my committee in summer, 2002. Now I am working on data collection for my dissertation, and preparing two papers for conferences in 2003 -- CIES & AERA -- based on preliminary data analysis.

In May, 2001, I went to the International Labour Organization (ILO) for a workshop on skills training for the informal sector, another area of interest for me. While in Geneva, I enjoyed the mild spring weather and visited an organic farm in the countryside!

In March, 2000, I went to Dakar, Senegal, where I participated in a short-term research project in adult education with an interesting group of educators (see photos below).

In 1999 I spent 3 months in Chad, where I was involved in a development project for FSU as well as pre-research for my dissertation.

Here I am in my office working for the CROP program in the Florida Department of Education.

This is a photo of me leading a small group activity at a 2-day workshop held in Dakar, Senegal in March, 2000. I was in Dakar for a week, as a consultant for FSU, providing support to a group of educators on a short-term project for the ABEL studies. The workshop presented new research to an audience made up of national and international adult educators, university scholars, government representatives and grassroots education groups, prompting discussion and debate on trends in nonformal education and training in West Africa.

This is a picture of me and the two international consultants, Moustapha Yacouba and Mahamane Toure, who presented at the workshop in Senegal. I had worked with Moustapha before in Chad -- he is Chadian but now lives most of the year in Burkina Faso.

This photo was taken in December, 1999, when I was visiting Montpellier, France. I was in the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France with my friend Keith (also from Tallahassee) and our mutual acquaintance from Montpellier, Angelique. What wonderful and strange shaped rocks we found in the "Garrigues" in southern France!
