House Reauthorizes Peace Corps; Bereuter Salutes Nebraska's Peace Corps Volunteers

Washington -- When the House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the Peace Corps on Wednesday afternoon, Representative Doug Bereuter went to the Floor of the House to salute Nebraskans who have served in that organization.

"In the 38 year history of the Peace Corps, more than 1,200 volunteers have come from Nebraska," Bereuter said, "including the 63 Nebraskans currently in the Peace Corps.

"Peace Corps volunteers have compiled a distinguished record of service to people in countries around the world. Volunteers provide badly needed, at times critical, assistance, and embody not just technical know-how, but also the ideals and the can-do spirit of the American people. There is no shortage of Americans, both young people and those with years or even decades of experience, willing to dedicate a significant period of their lives to volunteering to assist others.

"The annals of the Peace Corps are replete with examples of communities strengthened and lives changed, both among those who have received its assistance and among the volunteers themselves. Former volunteers have gone on to distinguished careers in many fields."

Bereuter noted that a former intern in his Washington office has served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Equatorial Guinea. He said also that five current Members of Congress served in the Peace Corps.
