Foreign Student learned from PCVs in Malawi

Shadreck Kamwendo said he learned so much from Peace Corps volunteers in his African homeland of Malawi when he was growing up.

So after he came to our country to study at Lake Michigan College, he repays that favor anytime he can. Last winter during a snowstorm, he set off on foot for a three-mile walk when his car wouldn't start. He wanted to make sure to be there to help his 91-year-old friend Beth take care of her ailing husband.

"Shadreck was shivering when he got here, but I didn't think too much about it since he is from Africa," Beth said. Then she found out he had walked. "He is such a friend."

In May, Shadreck earned his associate's degree in nursing while continuing to work in home care for elderly people. He also sang in the choir at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend.

While some foreign students have come under scrutiny after the terrorist attacks, Shadreck and many other African students continue to be wonderful caregivers during their part-time jobs and volunteer work in that field.

"We are so happy with the education and opportunities that our children are getting in the United States," said Shadreck's father, Steve, who has two other kids studying in this area.

They give as much as they take.

"It can be very lonely for me at times," Shadreck's friend Beth added. "But Shadreck comes over and drinks coffee with me and just makes me feel better about things."

Give Shadreck the credit. Give the Peace Corps an assist.
