Why not recognize individuals for a job particularly well done? Of course it is not "necessary" to do so, it is just a nice gesture. Why are you opposed to a kindness that detracts from no one and makes someone else feel good? Isn't usually a good thing to thank someone when ever you can? Does one writers receiving the Nobel prize for literature detract from every other writer?
