Kenya RPCV Bob Cone retires as Larkspur School District Superintendent

Larkspur school superintendent plans to retire

Larkspur School District Superintendent Bob Cone announced yesterday he will retire June 30.

Cone, 61, former principal of Hall Middle School, has served the district as superintendent since 2003. He has been with the district since 1994.

Retirement plans include travel to Bhutan, Ethiopia, Mali, Rwanda and Cape Town, training for a marathon, and doing volunteer work.

"I retire with a sense of sadness and a sense of joy," Cone said in a statement. "The past 11 years have been the highlight of my career. I am tremendously proud of where we are as a school district."

Board of Education President Kevin Mangan said the board will vote next week on a plan to hire a new superintendent.

A 36-year veteran of education, Cone earned a bachelor of science degree in economics with minors in philosophy and theology at St. Mary's College in Moraga.

He served in the Peace Corps in Kenya before becoming a teacher, rising through the ranks from a fourth- and fifth-grade instructor to vice principal and principal at several schools in the East Bay before joining the staff at Hall.

While Cone was at Hall, the school was named a California Distinguished School in 1996 and a National Blue Ribbon School in 1998.

He is credited with fostering cooperative relationships with officials in Corte Madera and Larkspur, maintaining good rapport with teachers and staff, and shepherding the successful passage this month of Measure B.

Mangan pointed to Cone as a stabilizing influence on the district during times of administrative turnover.

"I have to say that Bob is someone who is very hard to replace," he said. "He really has been wonderful for the district. I have to say he's leaving the district in much better shape than the way he found it."

District Librarian Carol Halpern, a negotiator and past president of the Larkspur Teachers Association, agreed.

"He has been awesome," she said. "He was just what we needed. He has been calm and focused and organized, and very supportive of teachers and really very protective of teachers, which has been a really awesome thing.

"There have been times in our district when the teaching staff has not always felt as valued by our superintendent than we thought we should have been. Bob is very respectful of the work people do," she said. "We really feel as if we are in very, very good shape. ... Yeah, we'll miss him."

Bush's FY06 Budget for the Peace Corps The White House is proposing $345 Million for the Peace Corps for FY06 - a $27.7 Million (8.7%) increase that would allow at least two new posts and maintain the existing number of volunteers at approximately 7,700. Bush's 2002 proposal to double the Peace Corps to 14,000 volunteers appears to have been forgotten. The proposed budget still needs to be approved by Congress.
