Shriver: Get involved
Kids can make a difference to others, themselves, state first lady says.

LONG BEACH When children volunteer, they help not only their communities, but their own education as well, California first lady Maria Shriver said Friday at a Long Beach conference.
In an address at the National Service Learning Conference at the Long Beach Convention Center, Shriver urged children of all ages to get involved in school programs that provide volunteering opportunities.
"You get so much more out of it than you yourself give," Shriver said.
Children are never too young to start contributing, and having kids volunteer at an early age instills an ethic that they carry to adulthood, she said.
"A 10-year-old child can be a
mentor," Shriver said. "We can all give back."
About 2,700 children and educators attended the two-day conference organized by the National Youth Leadership Council, which aimed to promote the benefits of service learning programs.
"There are so many people here who have dedicated their lives to giving back," she said.
Shriver, who was accompanied by her 15-year-old daughter Katherine, helped children make baskets of school supplies that were later handed out to more than 80 kids from the Long Beach Head Start program.
During her speech, she praised the efforts of Head Start, which was founded by her father Sargent Shriver, an attorney who ran for vice president on the ticket with George McGovern in 1972.
Maria Shriver also promoted the California Service Corps, a state office promoting service and volunteering on which she serves as honorary chairwoman, and Project Ignition, a national program that promotes teen driver safety, including issues such as seat belt use and speeding.
"I firmly believe that we all can do great things," she said.
