TUCSON, ARIZONA.- Douglas Nickel, Director of the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona (the Center), today announced that Robin Southern will oversee public relations efforts for institution. Southern will write and create materials to promote community and national awareness of the Center’s collections, archives, programs and events. Previous to the appointment, Southern was a Marketing and Communications Coordinator with the American Red Cross.
Southern has over seven years of marketing and communications experience, and five years of community develop me nt experience. Since 1999, she has worked in the Internet industry at various positions, including online journalist, web developer and programmer. Recently, as the Media Specialist for Luz Social Services, she developed a large web site for disseminating information on Hispanic cultural competency. Her background in new me dia (such as web design and online journalism) will support the Center’s ambitious project to develop online access to its collections.
Southern received her B.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Arizona . As a Peace Corps volunteer, she received extensive training in community outreach and program manage me nt. Her multicultural experience will aid the Center’s efforts to expand their recognition among diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.
Reflecting on her new assign me nt, Southern said, “I’m delighted to pursue public relations and communications at the Center because it provides me with the opportunity to utilize all of my skills—researching, organizing information, writing, creating attractive marketing materials, and facilitating effective community development. I have a diverse professional background, which I can use advantageously in relating to the variety of people who appreciate photography and use the Center. I enjoy my work and strive to continue learning about how various forms of communications can promote the study of photography and its history.”

 | Crisis Corps arrives in Thailand
After the Tsunami in Southeast Asia last December, Peace Corps issued an appeal for Crisis Corps Volunteers and over 200 RPCVs responded. The first team of 8 Crisis Corps volunteers departed for Thailand on March 18 to join RPCVs who are already supporting relief efforts in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and India with other agencies and NGO's. |

RPCVs Sam Farr, Chris Shays, Thomas Petri, James Walsh, and Mike Honda have asked their colleagues in Congress to add their names to a letter they have written to the House Foreign Operations Subcommittee, asking for full funding of $345 M for the Peace Corps in 2006. As a follow-on to Peace Corps week, please read the letter and call your Representative in Congress and ask him or her to add their name to the letter. |
