Dunloggin Celebrates Peace Corps
May 4, 2005
Karen Kehm's ESOL class at Dunloggin Middle.
Students in Karen Kehm’s ESOLclass have been corresponding with a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay since last spring as part of the Coverdell World Wise Schools program. Last November, they were given an opportunity to write a letter explaining why they should receive a phone call from their volunteer.
Only 30 schools nationwide were selected, and Kehm’s class was among the chosen! March 4, during Peace Corps Week, 11 students were given the unique opportunity to craft and ask questions of their volunteer in a conference call. The students appreciated the chance to talk directly with their “pen pals” and to learn more about Paraguayan culture and education as well as general information about the work of the Peace Corps. All the students came away with a deeper understanding of the importance of learning about other cultures and furthering the cause of world peace.
Peace Corps Week was established to honor the founding of the Peace Corps by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961. The agency just celebrated 44 years of service by more than 170,000 Americans who have served in more than 135 countries.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
