West teacher's influence stretches far
As a member of Dave Wiegand's first combined Aurora and Warrior's Word staff at Wausau West High School, I learned jouralism, editing and deadline management along with him. He never let on that he wasn't excited to be our adviser.
From the first day, we students owned those publications and worked hard to improve them. When Aurora won national awards in 1989 (the year after I was editor), I was as excited as the staff who earned that award because they carried on the work that my staff and I started.
Because of the experience I gained working on publications at West, I landed a series of jobs in the publishing industry. After my freshman year in college I did electronic page layout. Now I am publishing technology manager at Harvard University Press.
The day-to-day editorial skills turned out to be less important in the long run than the poise, project management, and deadline management skills I learned under Mr. Wiegand.
I would like to thank the Daily Herald for its recent profile of this inspiring teacher as he nears retirement. And thank you, Mr. Wiegand, for pushing and pulling hundreds of students into West's journalism excellence.
